aro having spaz attack, need answers!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know why
looking at your avatar i assume thhats your tankif not then here is my theory
This has worked for me NUMEROUS TIMES so keep an open mind

Buy cheap black paper from the store.... black out the sides and back of the tank....
this will calm them donw
they dont know where light is coming froma nd get scared by open spaces in the tank..

in the wild they live in murky waters....
with waters so clear, they see EVERYTHING
unfortunately if you dont stop it, it could kill itself by hitting something and having that trauma

so black out the bck, and sides, and have only the front exposed

also, look out for lights around the tank from the outside, dvd player, tv red light and make sure the inside of the tank is bright so at night, it doesnt see movements and lights coming from the outside too mch

all my aro tanks are blacked out like this
they are never stresed

i bought my 1.5 red aro from a person who didnt black out any sides of the tank

everytime you tlak near the tank the aro hits itself and gets scared, they thought it was normal - 1 day after taking it, the behaviour stops as my tanks are blacked out on 3 sides

There is nothing wrong with 55g as a grow out (myself i am not a fan of putting a puny juvi in a 7' tank straight away) as long as there is a larger tank on the list of things to do in NEAR future (mine grew at 1+" per month, i used separators to divide a 6' tank). Still your recorded growth in the 55g is way too little somehow.

I don't think any of my silvers are jumpers (i hope they stay that way) since i don't see bumps or scratches on their heads... and no loss scales

my jar is a wimp (fingers crossed that he stays that way) - he is pushed around by longer but slender silvers.

I noticed that my pims (which are usually placid in a fully cycled tank) are quite jumpy in the newly cycling tank with old media and sponges (that registers nitirite still) ... thus i would suggest you watch your water parameters. I recon nitirite levels could make fish jumpy ... and soon dead i suppose if the cycle is not completed

I have seen this set-up before even with black glass at the bottom.

i am also trying out this black set-up, but with black gravel.

and make sure the front doesn't face to a high traffic area...even so I get an occasional rambunctious darting Aro...it's like something tickles them and they do a couple of VERY fast laps...I hear it, and when I look the only evidence is the water is still lapping at the sides and the bottom is stirred up...

What i am a bit afraid with the black set-up is that we are encouraging the aro to be unsociable by not exposing it to people i.e. it sees people only during feeding and never again. My tank is not in highly trafficked part of the house - the face to the door is blacked out.

I wonder if this set-up will make it worse ... time will tell

Any time I am showing off my Aros...I never let more than 2 people in the room and they HAVE to sit...no getting close to the tank, mine seem to freak out at new faces and I can't ever wear a red shirt...Red anything freaks them out the worse...

hmm okay i'll try to do more frequent water changes... my silvers fine tho.. i had him for like 10 months now and its growing fast!! =D

With normal silver growth rate that silver would be between 13 and 18 inches long. This is way to large of a silver to be keeping in a 55g tank. If the silver youve had for 10 months is smaller then 13" then you are doing something wrong.

Touch it a little more during water change thats what i do to all my fish, dont do it too much
