aro tank mates help

gar + silver fish worked for me. i might just be lucky, silver aro school of silver dollars, flagtail, datnoids, some cichla.

I'll say it again, gar + silver fish = not a good idea. As Brian said, search the gar forum. There are gar keepers that frequent there that have kept a lot of gar for a long time and people that actually study them and they'll say the same. I've said my peace.

Too bad you don't like dats. Just curious why not?

Gar like to attack silver fish also, so it usually ends badly for one of them. they may be fine for a long long time and then one day something happens. Plus at that size, like someone mentioned, aros are pretty fragile. I would stay away from cichlids and especially if you do decide to get a gar, but it's very ill advised.

ditto

im really sure im going to get a gar when my aro is 15 inches. ive seen dats at the store and they are kinda pricey. dats seem kind of boring, tell me somethings cool things about keeping dats. datnoids are a maybe in my tank just dont know anything about them

i have discus school looks beautiful also a moray eel but he kinda hides out but when he swims arrow does not bother him i am thinking of picking up a wolf fish and a few chichlids

Stingrays are good but then birchirs might be a problem..
u have also ur traditional parrot fish
clown loaches are nice
a flagfin is good and get a nice big pleco

I can't stop you from making that choice, I can only advise against it. It's up to you if you're going to listen or not. At least you're thinking twice about it and not just blowing off sound advice without considering it, although you aren't going to heed the advice.

As far as dats are concerned, especially if they're comfortable, they can have a great wet pet personality. The bigger they get, the better they look and if you want to sell, they can fetch hefty prices at large sizes. I'd encourage you to look more at the datnoid subforum.

You need to get that moray into a brackish/saltwater tank.

From my experience tire track eels, lima shovelnose catfish, bichirs, pacu and plecos do well with aros. Also, everyone advises against keeping aros that are under 8" with any other fish, but I have kept the fish I mentioned previously (minus the cats, which I got last week) with my aro since it was 5" w/out any problems at all. I would definitly advise against keeping overly active/jumpy fish w/ silvers though. I have bala sharks with mine and they used to go crazy whenever there was any movement outside the tank and when the lights were turned on which always scared my aro, making him jump. They don't do it quite as much now that they are more settled into the tank.
