anything that wont fit in his mouth would be a start...

ive seen aros with giant gourami and some cichlid

I wouldn't risk putting a GG in with the aro, they can get rediculously aggressive when the get big and kill anything and everything in the tank.

could i get a lima shovel nose catfish with my silver aro?

Yeah, just make sure it's not too small, because they have slender bodies so they could easily be eaten by a larger fish, but from what I've been told, their stomachs are too small for them to be able to eat a fish that is similar in size, so you probably wouldn't have to worry about it hurting/eating the aro, just the other way around if it's too small. But I've been keeping two 6" limas with a 14"+ RB pacu for five days so far and I haven't had any problems. I just have a lot of hiding places for them, and so far they've been fine.

i had a 14"+ rbpacu with my aro gar and cats...i hate pacu with other fish, they nip fins, eat everything and do stupid sh^t...like run full speed into the side of the tank turn around and run into the other side of the tank for no reason...pacu with pacu in a large set up looks nice, expencive to feed, but the way to keep pacu..imo...
