Arowana and Jack Dempsey

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As my 450g comes together, I currently have my aro in with smaller sa/ca fish temporarily. He's a bit bigger than everyone else in there, but I keep a close eye on things. So far no one pays any attention to him. It's been this way for a week now.

The only thing upsetting is the little fish have taken a liking to aro sticks. Cheap little fish eating expensive aro sticks is a bit frustrating, but what can you do.

I wouldn't put a baby aro in with a large JD, maybe if the JD's were just babies it'd be alright if the tank was large enough.

The JD is a baby. I may have just convinced the finance to give her 20 gallon to her little sister and get a 55 gallon. That'll help a lot.

i have a 10" male jd with a 21" silver aro now and i haven't had any issuses...just wait to put them together till the aro is bigger as brian said...aros are more sensitive and jumpy at a smaller size

Yeah, once the aro is around 12" or so it would be fine, but at a small size it's a little touchy. A little arowana is a bit delicate to keep with a jack, and when it gets a bit bigger it can eat the little jack. I've got a 15" silver with some cichlids including a little 3.5" or so convict, and the aro completely ignores the con...best bet is wait til your aro gets big and get yourself a 4-5" JD. Jacks are pretty common so it's not like you have to jump on it or risk never getting one.

That's very true. My LFS has large ones for $15. I've never seen baby ones and they're on aquabid for $5. How about the baby aro and 2 small rays?

it works for me. have my silver in with smaller sa/ca cichlids including 2 jd's. aro has to be big enough to dominate or else i think it would get pulverized

My aro and EBJD get along just fine. I have created several "hiding" places for the JD, so he seems to spend more of his time among the structures, and as expected the Aro is always up top. I think that my Aro isn't as aggressive as other people's, because even at feeding time, they do fine. Now by far the smallest fish in the tank is a Firemouth Cichlid, and he's an *******!

Any other opinions?

I have a Electric Blue JD with My Silver Aro. No problems at all. When I first got him he was about 9"-10" long, he's about 20" long and he's filled out quite a bit since I got him. I've never had a problem from day one.
I've heard the electric blue JD's aren't as aggressive, I'm not sure if it's completely true but it seems to be working for me.:)

Hope that helps,

A/C Dood
