Arowana and Jack Dempsey

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a black arowana and three EBJD's and they get along just fine. The aro is larger than the EBJD's but they aren't small enough to fit in the aro's mouth.

you might put them together, but it all comes down to size, if your aro is too small the Dempsey might kill it , if the aro is too big ,your Dempsey will disappear for sure.

I have a 24 inch silver arowana with two 10 inch flowerhorns , two Jack Dempsey 7 inch each , one firemouth ,one convict , one mean 8 inches Texas,

I never had problems but the small ones have lots of places to hide from the big ones specially the arowana and the flowerhorn

I still can't decide. The aro is about 8"s. He only eats black and blood worms. He doesn't seem very aggressive. I have no decorations, nothing for the JD to hide in. I'd like to get some, just not sure what. Everything is usually way too small for a 135 gallon tank or way over priced. What are you guys using?

If you're looking for fake plants, you might find some at craft stores cheaper than your lfs. When I started into the hobby, I bought decorations, but now I prefer more natural looking stuff. I now mostly decorate with rocks. They're rather easy to find and usually free. I also like drift wood, but I haven't found the right pieces yet, and I refuse to pay for a chunk of wood. Plus, its rather difficult to boil a 4' piece of wood. I'm lazy so I stick to rocks.

I wouldn't mind getting some bigger rocks and making a cave out of them. I never thought of checking a craft store out for plants. Good idea.

My aro turned on my JD yesterday, gave little jack a scare I think. The aro was heading for a piece of krill and the jack zipped up and nabbed it...and the aro grabbed her by the head. The jack is fine, and I think the only reason it happened was the aro was ticked about the jack taking its food. Aro is 15", JD is around 6" or so.

Just make sure to pull the metal out of them, and they should be fine.

I had 90gal with jardini arowana, Jack Dempsey, 1 albino tiger Oscar and a black tiger Oscar. All fish were smaller then the Aro at first.. But the albino and JD grew super fast for some reason.. Anyways my aro was about 5", albino 4" but very big, and JD around 4". Came home today found the aro carcass on the tank bottom :( . It's weird cause the aro always bullied the Oscar earlier on.. Was it the Oscar or the jd that killed it iswhat I wannaknow

Also the black Oscar is not growing as fast as the albino he's like half the size and they were both the same size before I fear the black Oscar is next on the menu..
