Arowana attacking another..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had water Hyancith but they died since I do not have the proper lighting to support plant life. I guess my next question would be what lighting should I buy that is not going to cost me an arm and a leg. I will buy some Water Hyancith again, what other plants do you recommend?
I have been adding the Seech Prime to my tank and everything has settle down but I keep getting high readings of Nitrate80 PPM

Do you mean seatech prime? Or seatech stability? If you are only reading nitrates that means the bacteria are doing their job. You can remove them with water changes or setup a big pothos nitrate scrubber I mentioned to you a while ago. You could also put some pothos (just the roots) into the water to help with the nitrates. I think fake floating plants might be best for your situation right now.

You can do plastic at first, I am a fan of valisneria gigantea and horn wort, but they need time to reach the top.

Not a big fan of plastic to be honest, I will look into the other post and get some of those plants. thanks

As far as lighting I would go with leds rated for plants.

Yeah I was just looking into some flood lamps that I saw on one of the DIY videos, and they are cheap.

You will need to add more fish to distract them from one another not decor or plants, yes it will look pretty...how long they’d been housed together? I’d add some cheap silver dollars 4-5 of them. This nipping will eventually gets worse when they get big and the tank gets small.

I am planning on adding a Red Tail Cat Fish, and yeah I know they grow huge lol, but by then I should have build another aquarium much bigger to house them.

People buy water hyacinth? Around here people pay to have it removed. I recently added some to my tank I collected. I have just regular LEDs I hope they live. My mollies and grass shrimp love them.

Yeah I know but you wont believe how hard they were to find here in Kentucky lol

You can add water lettuce. I love the way the roots hangs and waves around. View attachment 1316174View attachment 1316175

I love that look, I am definitely going to see where and when I can get them and add them, your set up looks amazing.

S slv3rarowana i suggest you get rid of one aro or add some dither fish. Eventually they may get along, but regardless you will need to get a bigger tank, (I’m sure you’re aware). From the looks of it I’m guessing they’re around 10-12”? Keep in mind they grow fast, very fast tbh. One yrs go by fast next thing you know they’re 20”+ haha. Good luck and keep us posted.

Get rid of one? no way, I will just have to buy another one lol, I have to say that today I seen them doing much better, I know from one day to another might not be much of a change but they look like they are getting along. as for the eye issue that I mentioned I think the Aro just grazed the new driftwood and got some white algae on her eye. I have some of growing and I have read online is common and not to worry about it, I will be cleaning it this weekend unless you guys tell me that I should do so sooner and it might be dangerous to the fishes.

Do the fake floating plants do anything for the aquarium? or you mean to calm the Aros down?

I want to thank you all for the support and the fast replys, you guys are a great help and I hope to eventually be able to add some knowledge to this forum and help someone as you all have helped me.

for my experience with best way to keep 2 aro together is need to be either:
- same size when they are already bigger at least 16"
- or 1 bigger aro + 1 smaller aro but big enough so it won't be eaten (try one 12" & the other 7")

- adding other fish will keep aggression down but if u only want to keep 2 aro it's tough, hope try these see if it works better.

I just asked petzone for 1 Lei 10" + 1 Jar 7" to keep in same tank, i wanted to add black aro but will start w/these 2 for now. Last 2 aro i had together were 2 jar & it did ok when 1 of them was at least2x size.

good luck + if i had that size tank w/that that size aro maybe just add more and take the one out that isn't working well

Youre going to need a MASSIVE tank to support these guys for their whole life. Like, over 2000 gallons. Giving a fish more room usually curbs aggression in fish that "arent" aggressive.
