^ if so why do fish have colour? some colour in nature is "danger" I.E. yellow, red etc.
Fish know instinctively to stay away.

thats like saying why are some dogs brown and black and white? LOL... nah but i do believe some can but not all fish can see colors... esp the deepwater ones @ the ocean

Perhaps you could test it?

You just need the three basics to get an idea - blue, green, red (the three primary colours of the light spectrum).

Pick three towels, or pieces of card or whatever with the same tonal quality (i.e. if they're viewed in monochrome, they appear to be the same shade of grey), and either test them for recognition using food, or see which freaks them out most.

For food testing (I'm aware that fish will take longer to learn this behaviour than the cats I did this to back in high school):

1- Show them ONE colour, and offer them food. Do this repeatedly (even over a few days if you have to) until the fish recognises that piece of card as being an indicator of food being present.

2- Show them another colour and do NOT offer them food, even if it comes to beg. You must do this at the same time of day as you would normally feed the thing. Re-present the card several times and do NOT offer them food.

3- Next time, present the 'food card' and offer them food again. Alternate between the cards to see if there is a distinction in behaviour when the 'food card' is presented, and when a non-food card is presented.

4- Repeat the second step with the third card.

5- Repeat the third step and alternate between all three cards.

Granted, this isn't the most definitive experiment you could perform, but it may give you an idea without having to take your fish to a scientist who runs tests by shooting beams into the eyes of your sedated fish and monitoring their brains for response.

Also bear in mind that fish aren't the brightest of animals, so this experiment will probably take you the best part of a week to get any results you might be confident in.

Which colour do you trust more? A white poodle or a black rockwiler? :)

I don't mean with dogs, I mean more with poisonous food or pray.
Some fish have coloured male and less coloured female, for the purpose of mating.
