Alright, I'm gonna help you out big time. My silver aro was the biggest wuss I had ever seen out of any fish I've ever owned, to the point I was gonna get rid of him. It was embarrassing to see this fish that supposedly eats monkeys in the wild to be so scarred and skittish just because me or a guest walks by.
Here's what you do, try blood worms to get him eating again, drop it in and watch from a distance. He won't be as defensive and he will get to worry about eating instead of running. Are your barbs bigger than him? Because a zither fish should generally be smaller and less aggressive than the fish you are trying to help by using them.

My silver aro is almost 18" now, nowhere near big yet, but he's getting there. As a general rule of thumb for silver aro's, they will continue to be skittish, piss you off, and embarrass you until they are roughly 12" or more. Not all cases are the same but I seems to be a safe estimate of when hey finally man up and stand their ground.

However, as brave as they may become of you or other people/fish, there are still things that will inevitably freak them out. Mine freaks out like the devil is chasin him down when I use my magnetic floating tank scrubber. Freaks him the hell out! Which brings me to another point, KEEP A HEAVY LID ON THAT TANK!!! they just love jumping to their deaths!

Also make your lighting come on in as subtle way as possible. The sun will come up outside around 8am, and my tank lights come on at 10am to let the natural ambient light slowly illuminate the room, and at night I use a blue moon light just before the main lights turn off to gradually lower the light. Get him on a normal lighting and feeding routine and it should help him and you out alot.
So in closing, give him some time, try some nice bloody blood worms, ease him in and out of lighting, keep a lid on, and avoid overly large and overly aggressive species until he grows his big boy things.
Any questions about my aro let me know

Not to be a know it all *** face but I did actually see it on a documentary a few years back where they said the will jump extremely high and occasionally grab monkeys in low hanging mangrove trees during the wet season. I didn't believe it either but when I see that the have the potential to get upwards of 4 feet long and how their jaw is hinged, I wouldn't doubt that they actually can and do. The have keen eyesight, a big appetite, and jump like a mo fo, so I'm convinced lol.
