I am interested in possibly getting a arrowana sometime in the near future but not sure what kind I should try to get. I want something that isnt going to get HUGE and can possibly live in a 75g-125g tank for life with 1 or 2 tank mates. I know silvers and blacks get huge. Any suggestions?

Arowanas get big, it could live in a 75 or a 125 for approx 6 months or so depending on what size you get it at. Blacks grow slower then Silvers. Your going to need an upgrade on tank size eventually

Ive seen numerous people keep silvers in a 125. Not for life by any means, but a few years no doubt. Heck, i kept my first one in a 55 for 9 months and it was fine. Bigger is always better, but not always practical or affordable.

Well damn. I figured i could keep a arow in a 125g. Looks like I wont be getting an arowana

errr, few years in a 125? I dont think so. 55 gallons for 9 months? You must've packed that aro in TIGHT, 9 months in a 55 gallon with 12" of space isnt going to do the job...

Since most silver aro's i have had grow about 1" per month, and they are usually around 2 inches when i get them (always with yolk sack), they are about 10-11 inches long at 9 months. How is this to big for a 55?

Not alot else to say lol, why dont you keep some Ctenolucius hujeta, or some Hepsetus odoe, there cool fish wont grow to big and you could keep others with them.

Wow:eek: either you have had many aros or you can't seem to remember what stories you have told.

I bought my arrowana as a 2 inch juvenile and kept him in a 29 gallon for the first 6 months. He grew about an inch a month and thats with lots of water changes and heavy feedings. I then moved him to a 55 gallon for the next 18 months where he reached 20 inches, and then moved him to an 800 gallon display tank at my favorite local bar and grill. That was 15 years ago and he is now about 28-30 inches. So to answer your question, you could easily keep him in a 125 for 5-7 years. It really seems like once they hit 18-20 inches that their growth rate slows dramatically.

epic fail lol...nice one Brian

let me rephrase my statement 18 months in a 55 gallon with 12" width isn't going to do the job...especially when your aro is 20" long LOL. 15 years old and 28-30" long, that has to be the most BS story I've ever heard in my life...
