You've seen my tank, Sean! You're not going to have much spare time, so made it simple. With substrate, you need to spend extra time to clean it, or the water won't be so clean, which can lead to fungus and scale rot. However, if you want to keep loaches as tank mate, you need some gravel for those loaches to rub their mouth. Forget the sand. PIA and can ruin your filter, too!
i agree my bichir tank is a pain inda ass b/c of sand ,1 of my datnoid got fungus but cured

bare bottom bro. just how you like R1 to be when he comes over.

Personally I hate BB tanks, usually it's BB, no decor, way overstocked...looks like an LFS tank with nicer fish. Ugh.

I'd go thin layer of sand, just enough to cover, and some wood etc for the bichirs. Could do black sand but I'd go black back/light sand for contrast. True about the filters, but I haven't had any problem yet (fx5 and w/d). I get a little sand in the canister but it never seems to reach the pump, depends on the filter design I suppose.

I need to have something on the bottom, bit of sand, river rocks, something. And sand is easiest to clean, just vac the poo off the top basically just like bare bottom.
