Hey all... I just finished cycling my 220 gallon tank ( 72"wide x 24"deep x 30"high) and am ready to buy my first arowana (silver)... as you can see from the tank setup, it is viewable from 3 sides and is going in a waiting room of my office... I have set the decor up so that the top half of the tank is free of obstructions to allow him to move unencumbered through the tank...

the question I have for you all is what else should I put in this tank... was thinking of an oscar or two.. or maybe some other new world cichlids... maybe a Synspilus... I would love to hear other ideas as to some what colorful tank mates that would all get along well in this size tank

Thanx in advance

It's likely that a large silver aro will not do well in that tank. If the waiting room is high traffic with a bunch of strangers looking at it. Also if there are people on both sides if the tank the aro will have nowhere to retreat to.

As for tankmates, you need to give consideration to the aros size. Big cichlids are good but the aro should be at least 2x as the cichlids. At about 14" the silver will be able to deal with larger cichlids and the 2X ratio is less important.

Silver Arowanas are VERY jumpy fish...as already mentioned, that might not be the best choice for a waiting room. If you do decide to get the Aro, white clouds, plecos and clown loaches will all do fine in the same tank. I never had trouble keeping them as long as the Arowana is well fed. As a general rule of thumb, when the aro is smaller, dont keep any fish in the tank with it that it can fit in its mouth :)

it should be noted that a reception desk will be in front of this tank (without a receptionist behind it)... making it impossible for anyone to get close to the front side... the back of the tank has a couch pushed up against it.. so I am pretty sure that there wont be people on both sides of the tank ever... secondly.. this is not a medical office or a waiting room... I get 3-5 visitors a day MAX... sometimes not more than 1 or 2 people.. so its not like there will be a constant stream of people viewing this tank... it is more to impress a client when they walk into my office... and for my own pleasure...

In that case you are probably fine with the Arowana...I have more people than that walking around my tank in my house and my Arowana is fine...good luck with the tank/fish and let us know how it turns out!

a retic stingray?
Make sure you get a big retic lmfaoo, my old aro literally ate my retic in front of me.

Ok... what do you guys think of this... Along with my Silver... One Electric Blue Dempsey, An Oscar and maybe a flowerhorn or green terror... is that 4th fish too much??? or do you think these new world cichlids could all live happily in this tank???

you may end up with just a fh with that list.

i still feel that an arowana will be too spooked in such a set up.

Poly endlis go well with silver just make sure they are too big to be eaten.

dont fh kill everything thats in the tank except their mate?
