Arrowana Newb

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Asians must have a microchip and matching documents with them, otherwise they are illegal. Check our Vendor forum if you want to get one. Some of our international vendors have them available. Check with Koji in particular.

what are the difference in the aros??? just colours or is there behaviour differences as well???? the only ones I have seen are the common silver ones. Plus my LFS owner has two very expensive ones that are not for sale, they are a Gold and a Red. Not sure if either is asian or african or whatever. Can someone give me a good link to do some reading on different Aro's. I want to know what I am talking about before I buy one.

Thanks
Here is the arowana section. This has all the info you are looking for.

This link has the asian arowana threads that have 'asian arowana' in the title.

you have a 30" balsck arow in a 120:screwy:
It's ok as long as it's a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft 120-gal tank. BTW, that is the minimum size tank you should have for any full grown arowana

No it is not OK, It is very irresponsable. Also this aro is 30" which is not full grown. All that poor aro gets to do is swim in circles, it will never get a chance to swim at top speed. Black aros like are consantly moving and should be housed in a tank that is at least 3x there lenght and have a width/depth equal to there length. So that poor fish should be in a tank with the dimensions of 90" x 30" and it is gonna still grow bigger.

You can look at this post and see an deformed silver aro that was housed in to small of a tank; http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70488

i would say at lease a 170gall for 1 full grown aro i have 2 silver aros that r soon out growing my 100gal and i would keep them with large cichilds because the aros snatch the food quicker than it can dropp the the bottom for my large cat fishes

Does anyone know a good arowana dealer?? I rarely see them in stores where I am from. Is there like a jeff rapps of arowanas out there somewhere??
are you in toronto? If you are you should get smacked for this. They're literally in almost every single fish store.

x2, another point i want to bring up, aros dont stunt their growth, they keep growing but instead of growing normally, they grow out deformed. For all of you who think fish will stunt in small aquariums, they wont.

Don't yell at me please but I have never kept a Arrowana and the search function sucks so I can't find anything. I type in Arrowana and it gives me every thread with those letters in it not the word.

1.)I want to know what are tank dimensions needed for a full grown Arrowana.

2.) How many gallons is required for bioload??

3.) Are they aggressive like can other fish be housed with them??

4.) What are some good tank mates for arrowanas???
Search function works perfectly fine...
1. Depends what, but no matter what species, no way under 6x2x2.
2. Again, depends what you want in there.
3. Yes they're agressive, but some fish can be kept with them.
4. too much to list.

Get an Asian or Jar. They don't grow as big/long as the SA Arowanas, so tanks can be smaller (To a degree).

Also, a little note is that most fish in captivity never do get to their max wild size. Whether it be lack of nutrition or swimming space, I'm not sure.

BTW, most of the 30+ inch SA Arowanas I ever hear about are Silvers. Anything higher than 24-26 inches for a black seems odd to me.
