Article: What You Should Know About Fish Nutrition

There wasn't a lot of research on this article, it was basic thoughts on how to think about food.

I haven't read that NLS article for years, but I have read it before.

This wasn't meant to turn every idea upside down or 'disprove' anything. Very little in the article was based on any research and there isn't anything to cite.

It was meant to get anyone in the hobby to think about a few things, what they feed, how they think about foods, how they decide a particular food is good or bad, how they keep the food they do use and how they feed it, etc. It wasn't meant to steer towards or away from any particular food, but to put a desire in aquarists to always want to improve the food they feed.

Good thread.

i am no brand loyal, i use 3 different brands up to date and use them all still now for different fishes.
i do not give a damn whats the ingredient as long as my fish eat it and the food is high quality one, then again every companies claims they r the best one with "high quality" ingredients.
i am an owner not the fish, i am an owner and responsible one, when they both claimed its high quality one its confused me so i go to the basic of what owner one..and i as the owner will choose the best one which is its all about the packaging and impression at the store LOL.
yes maybe its contain msg, so what..its a fish and they dont react the same like us human, and yes its unnatural but yeah so keeping fish in the tank with fake plants (pun indetended LOL) and most food we feed them with :P
i will buy any brands as long as my fish eating it and dont cause it to die or get sick which is so far im good with those 3 brands i have for my 3 different tanks with variety of species in it :)

That is your choice, but I would never recommend that at all.

I try to take the best care of my fish that I can. This means meeting their needs better than me liking the package art.

Do you realize how bad a food would have to be to cause them to get sick and die?

Not only does Hikari havr MSG in their products. Some of their foods contain hormones too boost colors. And yes fish may eat more of it, but that is not because of taste it is cause they are trying to get the same amount of nutrition that they can get out of less NLS.

I don't see what so bad about MSG. I probably eat it all the time. My fish can too, until I see some evidence that is harms them :D

& What food contain hormone to boost colors? As far as I know, only thing hikari & other pellet foods include to boost color is astaxanthin.. Its not a hormone but is a natural carotenoid found in shrimp & other crustacean. And its harmless.. you can even buy it in a bottle. If anything its extremely healthy..

i have no idea to be honest when its in pellet form/dryfood..as long as its in good packaging and not damage and unopened when i got it and does not exceed the expiration date i take it its still good.
and yes we do have the same mission for our fish and so far i have goodluck with them.
i love my fish and as owner i give them all high quality and what i determined good for them.
btw when you say "that" what r u referring "that" too :(

neat article but ill stick to my home grown feeders (crays, shrimps, guppies, cons, soon to be paradise fish)...i feed them a variety of mostly..'natural' foods ..and iv done research on each fish for diet requirements...i rarely buy real fish food .. im to poor for that.

gut loaded feeders...and i have a very happy..very healthy fish that is active (for a sculpin) and full of color.

im gonna give example what us the average educated consumers are.
company A claimed their product is high quality one and you read in their label and understand that, then there is company B claimed the very same one and u understand the label ingredients..theres minus and plus from both companies that you dont really understand due to their 'smart" language that designed not to be understood easily by the average educated people.
the different is the packaging..company A packaged their product with high quality packaging while the company B packaged theirs in OK packaging which u already know the packaging itself what protect the food to becoming bad overtime while at the store..which one would u choose as far as your pet concern?

i feed them the same as supplement too couple times a week :)

Diets like that may not provide the best results in the end. Without a high quality pellet involved the diet can be missing a lot, and be very unbalanced (lots of protein unabalanced by other vital nutrients.

By 'that' I mean the way you feed your fish.

One goal of the article is to help people get past shiny packaging and choose a food based on quality of the nutrition, not presentation.
