on a side note i understand that the asian are banned in the usa. but there are quite a few in the asian fish stores in the oc. when i ask how it is they came to own an illegal fish they say they have a permit. i dont believe them. is that even a possibility?

Other nations restrict or prohibit possession of Asian arowanas; for example, the United States has listed this species under the Endangered Species Act, and therefore it cannot be possessed in that country without a permit.

They are lying and cannot obtain a permit.

That's a SA black Aro and they go for pretty expensive here in Canada. About 250-300 CAD depending on size. As for Asian Aros here are some price listings that I've seen from LFS's here.

All prices are in CAD and are retail from LFS's.

Size is about 6"-8"


Indonesian Green: 250-300.
Redtail Gold: 400-600.
Highback Redtail Gold:800-1000
Super Red: 1200-1500
Chili Red: 2000+
AAA grade Reds: 2800+
Xback Gold: 2800-3000+


Those are the prices I've seen so far but u can get them cheaper from online farm sources.

you could potentially get a permit. though not for keeping in house, definately not a shop.
maybe if you had a zoo or wanted to do scientific research you may be able to apply.
