Hi Guys,

I currently have a 6inch Asian arowana in a 55g with a few discus.

I was soon upgrading to a bigger tank and I plan to seperate the discus and the aro. The discus would remain in the 55gallon while I will be buying a new 220gallon for the aro.

I plan to make the 220 a predator tank and wanted options. What fish would best go with the aro, except stingrays.. I was thinking of the following -

(1) Jaguar Cichlids OR
(2) Nandopsis Haitienesis (Black Nasties) OR
(3) Cuban Cichlids OR
(4) Parachromis Dovii (Wolf Cichlids) OR
(5) Mix and match of 2 or more species of the above.

Would love to hear any inputs or if anyone here has kept Americans with Arowanas would love to hear about your experiences.

Thanks! Cheers!

I don't know alot about Asian arowana, but I do ca cichlids, the ones you have listed with possible exception to the Cuban can easily dominant a 220, I wouldn't risk having a expensive fish possibly shredded by them.

Okay, well where does that leave me then? Any other predator options? I don't want a 220 with one fish in it.

well the aro will fill out the tank once it matures, and most likely squabble with any other large fish in the tank. i would be tempted to try a giant gourami, but the 6x2 220 is really not enough tank to handle both those fish. if you went with something like an 8x3 footprint or larger you could start putting in other big fish probably. ive seen dazzling tanks with aros, gouramis, and freshwater rays.

definitely wouldn't try any parachromis as they are large and territorial and will mangle the aro.

you could have a large catfish or pleco in the 220 for sure though.

I'm tempted to try maybe a ray and a few frontosas. Though I really wanted parachromis but I don't want to risk it, the Asian aro being so expensive.

careful with the frontosas. ive never kept them but i know they require an alkaline setup whereas the aros like soft, acidic water. youre gonna wanna set up this tank to fit the needs of the aro, and if you add any fish make sure they can acclime to the water easily. frontosa would most likely be uncomfortable, even unhealthy in an acidic tank.

Oh boy! This is getting increasingly difficult!

Over here i see people keep large dats with large asian aros...

Either that or rays which you stated you didnt want...

Large plecos have also been added to display tanks from what i’ve seen in stores...
