Asian arowana

If these are the fish you mention are supposed to come with genuine CITES paper work then it is a simple job to determine where they were bred as the certificate identifies the registered farm from which the fish were supplied.
If it is one in Australia I would be very surprised, though you do have the climate for it in some parts of Australia. If the documentation does not show a facility in Australia then it looks like then are illegal.
So go ask for a look at the certificate and get the breeder information.

I would get that RTG looks really nice.

It's most likely from a private breeder or someone just traded it into the fish shop.

Just heard back from the "Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service". As of this moment the importing of asian arowana's is illegal in Australia. This is currently being reviewed by The Australian Government Department of the Environment and Water Resources (formerly the Department of the Environment and Heritage) (DEW) and the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS). I'm trying to find out when the review will be finished. It looks as though the original article that I found was done for them to evaluate the impact of importing asian arowana.

This is both good and bad news. Good because it's under review with the possibility of the fish being allowed into Australia through normal quarantine channels (not smuggled) but bad because right now it is illegal to import asian arowana.

I'll be contacting DEW and AQIS to see when the review will be finished and if it has finished what the outcome is. :)

It's not all doom and gloom yet.

Let hope for good news.:)

The RTG don't have any CITES certifcate but the super red that they used to have did. I didn't check the certificate but I'm assuming it's from oversea's since I can't find any info on a breeding farm in Aus for asian arowana.
As for the RTG, they may have been bred in Aus or smuggled into Aus. If they were smuggled in then I'm guessing they were wild caught (no CITES certificate) so I wouldn't be buying them.

Yeah, I'm sure that I will get good news about them lifting the ban on importing them. It's just a matter of when they will lift the ban. As with any government these things tend to take a long time.
