Asian red tail cat a monster?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hey all, thanks for the plugs!-) my wyckii is right around 20' now nose to tail and is still pretty evil, although he is obviously sedate compared to some. As off late we are going through a rough patch and he has done some serious fin damage to my 12 inch suncat, think I'm gonna need too make a decision myself soon for the good of the other fish possibly rehome them.... some days a want him gone, others I'm smitten with him/her.
cant imagine the damage he will cause to any cichlid once he has an sl around 28 inch if he gets that far, total length then would be what 32-34 inch? aggressive fish that stand there ground need to be in the tank if your even considering a com and you will not have a peaceful tank so dont expect that, at night they terrorise everything and they will cause bad damage if they arnt killing in all regular sized tanks.

so far he has killed a number of smaller tankmates, at 20 inch I can get away with fish over 5-6 inch, he doesn't eat fish above this size, he has eaten many smaller fish. so if we add another 50% to his length I would assume no fish under 10-12 inch will be safe from being a meal let alone the damage, I quite often wonder how he would do with a big dovii tankmate, could go bloodbath or begrudging truce?

imo rtg wont work unless its much much larger to start with, esp if artc are worse, my wyckii has been commed all its life, no good trying to add fish later on imo. I had an banja red at 14' a few months back and they had no issues moved the aro on because he was more aggressive to the other fish than the wyckii. Also I cant do any bottom dwellers, aimara will end up dead or the hemi will.

Well i think aimara will probably outgrow wyckii, normally they don't kill fish to big to be eaten, so as long as they wyckii won't go full suicide it might workt. Since the ARTC is a much bigger fish it seems possible that this scenario the aimara will be the one who gets killed, as was stated before.

Either way it's an unnecessary risk.

Lol I've always been a fan of your tank just because you're the only one who has kept a wyckii with numerous updates. There was one guy, not sure if it was this site or predatory catfish, but he claimed to have a large male dovii 20"+ with an equal sized artc. He said they seemed to accept the fact that no one was winning any fights. Idk how true this is, and I honestly feel like one fish would end up being left standing if they kept fighting, cause they'll end up fighting to survive. But he said he couldn't add anything else to the tank, if the dovii didn't kill it in the day the cat did at night. I personally think the wyckii would end up killing whatever dovii you put in because I'm confident it won't be big enough to compete, but will be aggressive enough to pick fights. And if you have this concept, why don't you think the aimara and wyckii coming to some sort of acceptance of no one winning being a possibility? Opinions? Cause I was looking forward to trying that one day with a large tank lol, wishful thinking right? I'd still attempt it when the time comes though lol, hopefully I get the exception

Haha, ta. I honestly think an aimara would bite a wyckii in half, they are suspected to take small dogs. The fact that wyckii hate all bottom dwellers wont help, ime equal lenght aggressive cichlids hold out pretty well with wyckii.

How long is she? I don't think the hemibagrus would consider a fish of equal size a meal, but of course territorial aggression is a different ballgame.

This 15" beast will kill for fun, than tear you into pieces than eat you. I didn't realize how aggressive it is until I own it. Now my aimara is somewhat aggressive(flares and ****) but it's not like this artc. She doesn't let anything in her tank. Trust me I tried, I wanted mix her and aimara together in the same tank but after the test u knew it wasn't gonna happen. Now aimara can actually have tankmates after she beat their ass.

How big was the aimara? If the cat is bigger (which he will end up beeing anyway since it grows faster and reaches bigger final size) i am not suprised it will stand its ground even without teeth, but at equal size? The Hoplias is till bulkier and has teeth.
