Just picked up an ARTC with a view to it living in my indoor pond (not built yet). She is currently at the 6" mark and living with Green terror, Jack Dempsey, Hoplo and 2 Pictus in a 150 gal.
How much time to I have before the ARTC gets it's evil head on and offs my other fish?
My main worry is that it trys to swallow a pictus the wrong way and its spines get caught when it tries to regurgitate it.
Will post some pics when it decides to come out of the rockwork.

Ta in advance.

good luck... that fish isn't like the sa version which swollows whole... the artc bites chunks out of the fish if its too big for their mouth...

If he's anything like my wyckii, he'll never come out of the rockwork. :D

I've had very few problems with my wyckii (similar temperment/disposition to the ARTC). I do have a TON of visual barriers, hide spots, and caves. He claimed his own log that he defends to all hell, but as long as the other guys don't get too close, he's ok.

My guy is just over a foot now, but I honestly can say that it still makes me uncomfortable with him being in with so many other tankmates.:nilly:

Thats what i've got (Hemibagrus wyckioides ) which is what I presume you have. (wyckii) I know there is confusion with the naming as ARTC were previously known as Nemurus or something similar which is now another type of Bagrus. By all accounts they are pure evil from what I have read.
The ability to bite fascinates me, can anybody shed any light on how this happens, do they have some sort of teeth etc?

....anyway I forgot. Can anyone answer my question. Currently 6", what size do they turn evil, how long will this take? I will do the maths (or math, for our friends across the water) and this will tell me how long I have to get my pond finished.

They become evil as quick as they can get something into their mouth in any direction possible... Head first, tail first or sideways. Once they size something up and can figure out how to swallow it, the evil is already there... It just gets turned on!

Im pretty sure wyckii is diff to yours i think thats the crystal eyed or devil cat or whatever its called. I have a 11" Nemerus which is very similar temperament and like was said before he is fine unless someone come in his spot then he will bite and push them away. I have seen him drag my ornate pictus out of his spot by his pectoral fins (i think) a few times. Has never done much damage though.

At 6" mine could only be kept with bigger cats. He did square off with the one cichlid I had in the tank a hemichromis fasciatus. It even lip locked. It hit a channel cat slighty larger then itself until the channel left his area. It absolutely fought the 5" ARTC until one had to placed in another tank or risk lose of life..

fish vary by specimin. there's one that's been here in my apartment for about 8 months and about 8" who has seen very little growth and very little attitude. either way the sooner you can get the pond done the better. i'm sure he'll be much happier in there. the larger area also keeps angry fish pleasent a lot of the times.
