ARTC is naturally born evil. I was housing a 10" for a buddy, and he kept going after my 10" turtle. I separated him in a 20 gals tank, and he slided himself out of the crack on top, tried to get to the 10" dat in the hospital tank next to his. By the time I found him, he was all tried on the floor :screwy: ARTC should be kept as food :ROFL:which is what they are back in the country :headbang2

Good call niblit...you can't get much more accurate than that.

Sorry to hear about the chaos this guy is causing...that is so frustrating.

I appologize for the double post, but I passed the time I had to edit my post.

I was thinking that it may be a good idea to post this as a sticky. I can't tell you how many times I've seen ARTCs in fish stores because they destroyed a tank. One lfs (that I'm slowly starting to hate) had a 20" ARTC that they priced at $19.99 and advertised as a "great addition to your tank" just so they could dump it on some poor schmuck.

I talked to the manager about that marketing idea and was basically told that they didn't care...real classy establishment. :irked:

Agreed! - Although I read up on this fish before making my purchase I severely underestimated the aggression factor in such a young specimen.
If it gets stickied we'll need a photo. These are the best I could take.

Wish I had pics of when he bit the tail off my ID shark, it grew back no problem, but then it happened again, and they got seperated. The ID is doing great now.

Exactly...and I think that's common. We tend to put human limitations on animals and forget that other animals are designed for their success in the wild...regardless of how ruthless it may seem.

Look at koltsix's situation...who would have thought a 3" gulper cat could take an 8" leichardti (Maybe that should be a sticky too :D).

There is a big difference in disposition ARTC are agressive South american RTC are just eaters meaning I've never seen an ARTC not fight even fish bigger then itself but RTC don't really bother anything they don't think they can swallow. Sorry for the loss. Honestly that is why I prefer ARTC,marbled cats, wyckii,& perruno cats as these are aggressive not just eaters that cram things in their mouths. Sorry for the loss of the severum

To the top we go! I know this is an older post, but Its been a while since I've visited my friends here at MFK and quite frankly I only feel comfortable posting on the ARTC- a fish I have owned.
To Clear things up, saRTC's and ARTC's greatly differ in temperment. SA grow much larger, will eat whatever can fit in their mouths, but they are not as aggressive, meaning they can share their tank with other large fish who hold their own.
ARTC's, on the other hand, grow smaller(38" i believe), And are not compatible with other bottom dwellers/nocturnal fish. ARTC's differ from their south american counterparts in a sense that they dont kill tank mates to eat, rather they are defending their space. They wait until night to stalk, bite and kill anything that annoys them. Very rarely did my ARTC eat feeders, only killed them and would leave them, preferring to eat pelleted food instead.
There are some FW fish that can live well with a hemibagrus, Most notable in my mind are raphaels.
Recently I orphaned off my ARTC to my Sisters tank, a 90G corner unit where hes all alone.

Thats cool! we have a grip of those at the LFS and I have left them alone... Something said tyo wait and read more :)

Now I know why :D

Thanks!!!
