I used to live right on the beach in Imperial Beach, CA. I had a SW pond in the yard where I kept a breeding pair of Leopard sharks. The pond also held a trio of brown smooth hound sharks and a pair of CA horn sharks (Not fortunate enough to have any spawns from them). In the life of the pond, I also had the occasional bat ray and guitar fish until they outgrew the pond.
Once or twice a week, I'd cast net for sardines or arrow squid from one of the Navy piers to feed the pond. They also were fed frozen fish and squid if the net came up empty.
The pond had a huge wet/dry filter and a wave dumper trough. Weekly water changes were from the surf with a sand and resin filter cartridge to clean the incoming water.

I never started up a large SW set up after leaving SoCal due mainly to the cost of salt mix. I have to mail order all supplies and live stock due to living in a really rural part of the south and the freight for salt mix is cost prohibitive.
I have one small SW set up currently running for a pair of banana yellow dwarf moray eels we're hoping to breed. We have plans for setting up another small SW set up for breeding livebearing brotulids.

In truth, I never liked banning any member. Banning spammers neither caused me any regret or satisfaction. It's just something that has to be done.
No one actually drives me crazy but, I do lose all leniency when personal insults start flying. And, as a retired combat veteran, I take exception when those who never served start throwing the term 'nazi' at the staff. That's an instant permanent vacation in my book.
In the end, I come to this site primarily to talk fish. When I'm forced into the tiresome chore of moderating I treat each situation the same way I did business in the military. I'm blunt and to the point. At times my approach may appear as overly aggressive to those unfamiliar with the military life style. But, that's too bad. I just want the moderating aspect of my role in the site to be done so I can go back to discussing our hobby.

being raided by F&W where I lost $4k in fish and $$$$$$$$$$$ in legal fees to get the situation resolved in my favor in court.

What species were you keeping that were raided by F&W? And how did the situation get resolved in your favor?

I had H. mal, FW rays, pima, and others. All legal in WA but not in MS.

The court decided that there was no malice involved and that I was not attempting to sell these species (my business was in Cherax crayfish) and my private collection sales records involved legal species such as Tropheus, Gibbrosa, and other legal species. And, since the seized fish were thrown out when they died in transit, the court ruled there was insufficient evidence since the agents didn't think to take pictures of the fish before or after they died.
The worst part was the loss of fish that were perfectly legal such as a trio of trop gars, a columbian gar, and a WAL (thought to be an electric eel). There were other legal fish confiscated as well. But, those listed hurt the most.

Great read! And thank you oddball :). My question is this:
Have you ever tried breeding datnoids? Why is breeding them so hard?

Never tried a serious approach towards breeding Dats. As to why they've yet to be spawned in captivity, that's the million dollar question. Once the reason they WON'T spawn is discovered, it can be compensated for and allow for their captive spawning success.
That factor could be something like coordinating their spawns timing with that of prey animals that will feed the developing fry. Or, a pressure requirement seen in several marine species where the females have no musculature to lay eggs so they utilize a rapid ascent up the water column to cause an internal pressure change (the bends) to forcibly expel eggs from their bodies.

Have you ever tried breeding the 2 less-common species of freshwater angelfish? I'm sitting on some altums and a leopoldi now and I'm thinking about trying.

Never really been into angels. We had a tank with 150 angels that my wife wanted. We had several spawnings with them but, nothing planned.

I've read that altums were difficult to tank spawn. I wish you luck. Be sure to post any success stories.
