This is true.

You dont need fish to be advanced either. An advanced expert is a book of knowledge and experience.
Fish collection does not mean anything, whats in your brain does.

Any shmuck can make an aqua site and buy a fish and a 8x8foot pond, but It takes a diehard to get indept and become knowledgable.

So what are you saying? Are you trying to differentiate being advanced and experienced through this statement? Or are you saying you dont need to keep fish to be knowledgeable about fishkeeping??

And whos this?? Why bring a schmuck that makes an aqua site and a 8ft pond? LOL

I've bred bettas before, but I studied for a month trying to find all info I could on breeding them. I was unsuccesful with raising the fry though. :( But I am by far from experience though.

IMO, an experience fish-keeper is someone like Oddball or Joe a.k.a Fruitbat. They are very knowledgeable people that have kept a wide variety of fish and bred some of the more advanced fish. Oddball bred Leopard Sharks and that takes a lot of time and money to do and you need to practise proper husbandry to get them to breed. I know I couldn't even think of doing something like that. :)

Would you be attacking me now????

Not you my good man.

To me....its very very simple...

I always believe that in this fish keeping hobby of ours...there is always a mountain higher than another! Just when you feel that you are there...you have maybe what you consider to be the most satisfied tank set-up...you got this hard to get oddball..monster tank etc etc...

just look ard or ask ard...there might be just someone thats got collections that simply made your collection seemed puny and child's play.

So, it all, never think that you are already 'there' and attained all you already need to know...there are heaps of peps out there that are much much deeper into this hobby..

the key is to stay humble..still learn as you go along the way..thats the key of a good successful fish keeper :)

I think you can call someone an advanced fishkeeper -- or aquarist if you're feeling especially snooty -- at some point BEFORE the point I've already reached.

:hitting:

LOL youre not helping at all...

So what is the point youve reached? How can you say that youre experienced/advanced/knowledgeable in regards to keeping fish ?

Anyone can advance with the full knowledge of a particular species. ie; water chemistry, natural environmnt, and husbandry of a particular species of fish. This will enable you to understand and keep them at an advanced level. The patience and resilience that can do that with hundreds of different species definately shows advancement in the hobby.

If you can get a species named for you it might not make you advanced but it will give you serious bragging rights.

I definetly agree with one statement: The more you learn, the more you realize how little you know!

I'd say the measure of an expert is the amount of time spent researching, learning, and gaining in depth understanding of the chemistry and the animals. How long someone has kept fish doesn't necessarily mean a thing. Working at PetCo I spoke with a number of people who claimed to have kept fish their whole lives, yet were unfamiliar with what a "nitrogen cycle" is....yikes.
