driftwood, thanks for your recommendation of getting 6 tapajos reds if I want to form at pair bond.

You still might not end up with a pair. You might be able to do it by getting 4. the reason i say that is because they are gonna cost you some bucks. Hopefully you can find some grow outs somewhere. Did you send Jeff and e-mail? See if he can get some smaller ones that way it won't cost you an arm and leg. Peanut may also give you a better idea of how many you should get to come up with a pair. i would think you'd need several females and males so they can pick their own mate.

It all depends on the time of the year, during the rainy season in S.A. its hard to collect any species of pikes, as the water is deeper. Best thing to do is wait, as great things come to those who wait...;). They will become available again, when is anyones guess. Still suggest you email Jeff Rapps from his site at TangledUpInCichlids.com cuz sometimes he has fish in stock that he doesn't have listed...;).

Problems with pikes is that they are conspecific, in other words they don't like other pikes. With Lugubris pikes you get a little bit of a break as they will live 'peacefully' together for a while. Once they hit subadult though (first color change) they can have a complete change of attitude. Thats why you generally get larger groups of pikes and let them pick their own mates. The larger groups also help to diffuse the aggression. Another problem is Lugubris pikes are hard to sex when they are smaller than 10". Buying an adult pike of this size can be quite pricy, so your best bet is to get a group of young pikes and grow them up together hoping they will pair up. Minimum # of pikes should be no less than 3 pikes. Of course, the more the better...;)
