The female is still holding. The male decided that parenthood is to much trouble and must have eaten the eggs he picked up. He is back eating. He still swims around and protects the female though. The female clearly has a mouth stuffed with wigglers. They are not going to last long in that tank when she realeses them though. I'm tempted to pull here out this weekend. Any suggestions?

I have to catch my g. abalios to get them to release fry when brooding. With my uaru and sevs in the 220g, the abalios just don't feel comfortable releasing fry. I catch the fish with lights out and they will usually either 1) release the fry in the net they are caught in or 2) when I hold the fish in the breeder net/box.

Again, I am really jealous of this pair... :( I have been wanting a pair for a while now. Congrats. :D

Thanks.

How many days do most people wait to strip the fry. I was thinking about waiting until Sunday but I don't want to wait until she releases them and they get eaten. Seems like from reading that they hold them for 7-9 days but I could be remembering wrong.

Totally different species but if I haven't stripped the fry by day 3-4 I get nothing at all. IME

Well, I was getting a little scared the fry would disappear so I went ahead and got them this morning. To my suprise when I went to do it the female was no longer holding. I thought I was to late but when I looked at the male I realized that he now had all of them. They must have transfered them sometime last night. These really are a cool fish. I did not expect that at all. I went ahead and caught him and got the fry. I think I jumped the gun a little early though. They are wigglers but still have almost a full eggsack so they are newly hatched. I suspect it is going to be hard to keep them alive but time will tell.

I got about 200 fry from the looks of it. They are wiggling good but I'm not exactly sure how to replicate there parents mouthbrooding to keep them good and alive. I put them in a 10g with a cycled sponge filter and and extra airstone to hopefully create more current and movement like they would get in there parents mouths. If they breed again I'm going to wait till day 7 and see if I can still get them. We will see what happens with this batch though. Anyone have any advice on keeping these little guys alive?

I don't think you need a filter at this point, but appropriate agitation is probably important. Might want to use a smaller container, like a mid-sized pickle jar, and an airstone with a regulator. A 10g might be too big.

That's a lot of fry. Good luck!

The fry have been free swimming for 2 days now. They are eating crushed flakes, baby brine, and golden pearls. So far pretty much no losses with them which is a bit suprising to me. Looks like there is 150-200 of them total.
