ATF/Dorado/Goonch/Datnoid PICS!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
DB I respect your 2 cents very much ... I would only be able to do a half divider for fear of the ATF's smashing into it, not to mention the tank has 4, 2 foot by 1 foot holes in the top as my only access so it would be impossible to put in a sturdy full divider ... and honestly a half way divider isnt going to stop the cats or the rays .... a couple days a week when I come home from work and turn the lights on I cant find the female ray, then she comes gliding in from the top of the tank literally like a bird coming down for a landing ... its actually really funny ... the 40 gallon breeder is same water and filtered by the same sump and bio balls as the big tank and its been running for almost a week now, so maybe thats what I'll do .... is it possible to have a rough estimate judging by that squirming video, as to when she's goona have them? (I doubt it, but figured i'd ask) how far along must she be to see them moving in there? The pups are really active, but I dont want to keep her in the 40 for a month cause she is big! It would be a really tight squeeze, but thats really the only option other than watching her like a hawk and hoping to catch a sign that she's going into labor and netting the pups as their born .... I know she's been prego for at least 2 months, probably closer to 3 so I figure they should be born within the next month, but thats all I've got to go by

I've been updating here, since its been a thread of all my fish ... I did post a few times in the ray section earlier on with questions .... I think I'll keep it here if thats ok ... the ray guys might get mad at me with how the goonches play with the rays :-( DB and trev know I'm posting here and have helped me with questions about the rays ... been setting my alarm and checking on her in the middle of the night to make sure she isnt having the pups while I'm not there! Never thought fish keeping could be this nerve racking! Was thinking of setting up a lab top with skype or something so I can check on her even when at work with my phone so I can come flying home and save the pups

A preggo ray swimming at the top isn't good. It's possible for her to just reabsorb or miscarry the pups if she's stressed, which from what your telling us sounds like she is.

I'd get another tank if you can, hell a Rubbermaid ag vat would be great, and plum it to the same system and move her ASAP. The longer you wait the more stressed she's going to get, the better your chance of loosing pups. With pups being worth the same as you paid for the parents when you STOLE them from Jim, I wouldn't risk it. I think it was Stan that had a Hystrix litter not long ago and he had over a half dozen pups.... That's a lot of loot to be toying around with loosing.

I wouldn't count on finding live pups if left in there, chances of you "catching" it in time are not good at all. Rays are tricky, sneaky, flatfish.

All rays are different, but typical gestation is around 100 days, I think Hystrix 120, but I'd ask Richard (Aquaman45 to be sure) movement usually being seen around the halfway point. So if you've been seeing movement for 2 months she's got to be way close.

Ok cool .... thanks DB ... I'll see if I cant figure something out for her ... if you and trev are both telling me I wont catch her giving birth I have to let the pipedream go and figure out a better plan ... I have to say though, I doubt she's stressed, it seems like she enjoys it ... I dont have much current towards the bottom because of the rays, but up towards the top its intense and she catches the "wind" and cruises around .... the goonches dont ever leave their side unless theres food, so thats the only time they meet, otherwise its the rays climbing all over the cats just being curious .... the male may be bothering her though, since she does have some bite marks on her rear flanks, and every once and a while I find him attached to her with his mouth, and slams down on her, as though she were the sand and he was trying to bury himself ... guess thats another reason I should def try and come up with a way to get her out till birth ... thanks for the help

Al, what kind of ray is in your avatar? Flatfish have really been catching my interest lately and I think I might be intrested in getting into some someday.

I must say chicx I'm upset I didnt get into them earlier, although I dont know if I would have had much success with my rudimentary fish knowledge in the beginning, I like to think I'm getting my sea legs now ... I think they would do well in many of our characin tanks since they occupy totally different niches and dont really bother eachother whatsoever, although a small characin is likely to be a ray treat ... they do put a heavy bio load into the tank though, these guys eat and poop like no other fish I've seen, but they are awesome and extremely personable and very aware of whats going on outside of the tank

Chicx- That's electric lava lamp Larry in my avatar. My favorite Marble I've ever had. Mature and only 7 1/2 inches across. :) He's definitely one of a kind. I'm a huge fan of the midget Marbles. My favorite rays, but really like my Falks cause of their constant swimming - the Dorado of the ray world, but they get big. I have a few midget Marbles here I've had well over 5 years and they aren't over a foot. I had a half dozen living in harmony in a 6x3x1.5 with my MBU and the 8 Odoe. Would much rather have several smaller rays then a couple big ol lunkers.

I told you guys on the flat fish. Once you realize their ability to breed in the right conditions I think it's stupid not to have them. Breeding your own is almost as much fun as building epic filters yourself to care for the ridiculous amount of waste they make from eating ridiculous amounts of food.

I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm just as proud of the filtration I have as the fish that use it.

My issue is 20+ rays in house right now, water changes of 300+ gallons a day and PH of 8.5 that needs to be an RO/Tap mix to hopefully get down to low 7s and 1/3 the TDS I have now. Now the issue is getting that 300+ gallons of mixed water everyday. With over 2K gallons of tanks in my basement I'm pretty much out of room, as the tanks are already stacked.

The South American fish hate the water here. African fish love it.

Alix---- Look up Fishdog's floating nursery. It's exactly what you need, except you'll have to anchor yours due to the white water in there.... lol This would be an alternative to a Rubbermaid, or kiddy pool, but I'd definitely do the Rubbermaid. I keep 2 spares around just in case.
