Thank you DB, your info is much appreciated ... and i agree the big predator communities are certainly not ideal to stimulate breeding in the rays ... i kind of look at having pups as exciting and an added benefit to ray keeping, but i wouldnt say thats the reason i got them, if you get me ... gotta do some thinking, but if Mr Male continues he's going to find himself in the goonch tank, that should humble him a bit :P

Well i finally decided i had to move the mature male hystrix out ... i really dont have a great place to put him, but its gotten to the point that i think he may kill the female by repeatedly biting her and stressing her .... he is now in the goonch tank, which is not a very safe environment ... the female has almost stopped eating and has wounds around 60 percent of her disk, the back being really bad, just hope she doesnt develop any infections due to the wounding ... even the male has taken some damage, i'm assuming from her, his eye is scratched up and he has a wound on his belly ... last night was the final straw when i caught him attached to one of her feet, and she dragged him around the tank a few times and he wouldnt let go ... hopefully the goonch tank's filter can handle him and both get back to normal soon ... this isnt a good fix, but its the only thing i have available, theres just no way i could let what was happening continue ... anyway wish me luck fellas! :) hopefully everything will be alright

I forget how much my glass 220 distorts the size of the fish ... the 11-12 inch male hystrix looks awfully small in this tank, making the goonches seem even bigger! Hopefully every thing works out

You think the male bred the female?

Let her heal and throw him back with her and he will prob breed her. This is a very common thing if you want to breed rays. Your gonna have to constantly seperate them you should set up another tank or divider or something.

Thanks guys ... he's been getting more and more aggressive over the last few months ... then all of a sudden this past week he just went nuts, causing her to stop eating basically, and her wounds are pretty bad, i'll get a pic of her today ... even if he did breed her, i doubt she'll be able to hang onto the pups considering her wounds ... i figure hopefully they'll heal up in a month or 2 and i'll reintroduce the male ... if he works out with the goonches, thats what i'll do constantly move him back and forth ... guess i just hoped i could keep them together all the time, hopefully my mistake with this approach isnt too late to fix ... my biggest concern is the fraying of her disk, tough to tell whether its the fraying from the bites, or a fungal or bacterial infection ... hopefully with stress of the male gone now she heals up fine

Well, after a week separate the female looks so much better, still not eating much though ... no longer worried about infections, the wounds are healing nicely, just going to take time, and hopefully she starts eating lots again soon! Male is doing good, other than the fact that its so difficult to feed him, as soon as pellets go in the catfish swarm him and gobble everything down ... theres something with the rays stimulating the competative drive of the goonch, they have never been this active searching for food in this tank ... they usually wouldnt even really search for pellets until the lights went off, now as soon as i move the lid they come flying over ... good news is the ray has figured out this as well, so anytime i see him in the feeding spot, i drop a pellet or 2 in and he usually gets it before the cats do .... just have to do this 20 times a day and he should eat plenty! Lol :(
