Is it true that they don't thrive in fresh water?

In the St Johns river system, some live their entire lives in freshwater. In tanks, it sounds like the excess waste production is a prohibitive problem.
 
I've had a brackish tank running smoothly for a few years now and I'm interested in getting an Atlantic Ray,,, Plenty of room and very peaceful tankmates are ready to go...

I'm new to the forum and would really appreciate some guidance, if ppssible.
