and it didn't work:( First I put my RTC in a rubber maid container with just enough water so it won't dart around and used prime to add slimecoat. Massaged the curled gill as how Wet Whisker stated and it just wouldn't stay down. He's almost 1ft and it's not at the gill plate yet but getting very close. Maybe a few mm's away from the plate. I do regular routine wc's, raised the temps and added salt but it doesn't seem to fix it. Water Parameters are good too. Other then that I succeeded fixing the other gill that was curled due to lowering the tempurature...my fault :duh:... Is there any other way on fixing it? Will he be ok?

Anyways thanks Wet Whiskers and all u other MFKers for the helpful info. Maybe I'll try another attempt on fixing it once I transfer the RTC to it's new larger home.

Im going to tell you from experience Gill Curl is not curable or irrversible, it needs to be managed so it does not get worse. BTW you are doing the right thing by checking your water parameters and making the proper WC's it shows you care and are concerned. Like I said i am sorry to say it but it is not something you can cure. i have read of people curing gill curl but never seen it and noone can sow me evidence

Ya this is my first time experiencing gill curl on RTC's. Also ya I do care for the little guy alot. For some reason I've always had a special bond with RTC's but I've never really experienced on keeping one forever due to aquiring proper size homes for them. This is my 4th RTC I've owned and this one I really want to keep so he/she is very special to me. I even have names for my RTCs. This one is named "Spot" hehe. Anyhow I really hope my future plans come through and build a pond for Spot.

Hey, there. I've fixed gill curl a couple times this way. However, once it hits the gill plate or has become hard this does not work. This works very well if you catch it quickly. How long has he had gill curl?

Edit: I have to mention that it took two rounds on one fish to get the gill curl to go away. I did it about 2 days apart to let the fish rest. It sound like the gill curl is pretty severe now as it is so close to the gill plate. I know its a LOT of work to wrestle these guys out and do this. Unfortunately, thought, if it has any shot of working on a severe case, you'll probably have to go at least a couple rounds with him. Other than that, I only know of surgery. It's usually not necessary as in good water conditions and lots of aeration, I have been told that these guys do just fine with gill curl. (And yeah. My husband cracked a joke about the fact that I look like I'm 17 in my avatar photo, but I swear I'm a big girl with plenty of experience.:))

Hey Jen, that's your name right? Anyhow I noticed the Gill Curl about 2 weeks ago. He may have had it earlier as I rescued him from a friend who neglected the home he was in but I didn't recall seeing it. Also the curled gill is still soft and has not reached the gill plate. It was worse before when I had the temperature lower but it's gotten better after I raised it but it's still there. I will try another attempt another day. It's 1am here and got work in 4 hrs and god who knows why I'm still up (day off today and slept all day...). If any other helpful advice u or anyone can help much appreciated.

PS: Tell your husband that he has a cute 17 year old looking girl as a wife:) The emblems are funny:D Also I'm sure u have the experience and alot of care for catfish;)

Thanks,

Andy

If he comes from a neglected home, he probably had gill curl starting if it wasn't already there. His gill was probably already primed and ready. Just moving tanks you could have gotten pH and temperature swings that could have made it curl up. Glad that the temp seems to be helping. Is the gill plate dented at all? I've seen gill curl that hasn't yet caused the gill plate to curl, but dent. I think you might have a chance if it hasn't and if its still all soft. I do hope it works. I'm not sure I'd go the surgery route. I'd talk to people about it, and see if its really necessary. It's just risky in that you have to do anesthesia which could kill him if you don't do it right and then you could get an infection. If it looks like you will have to do it, then I'd ask around to see who has done this before.

I got the Monster Fish Keepers emblems yesterday and wanted to show everyone how awesome they are. There was a tornado warning and it raining buckets and fish tanks yesterday, so I opted for almost no makeup and pigtails. Turns out, it takes off a decade and makes me look like a kid. God, now that just made me feel old....
