What helps my tank is that its acrylic
Other then that I have 2 acrylic sheets covering my two openings then a heavy dual fluorescent light on top. For the small opening on the back for filtration, I just used a water bottle fill with water.

Im pretty lucky that my leichardti is really mellow. I still dont like to take chances though so I also have sand bags weighing down my lids. I always keep my aro fed really well as I find when they are hungry they like to jump around a lot

My aro has the same issues at night, I hear alot of splashing if there is not light source.

Most of what I have heard about difficulty digesting mammalian meat pertains to Cichs (like especially africans) and Is mostly if their diet consists completely of meat. I haven't really heard of aros having trouble with it. As long as you feed it (mammal meat - yum) in moderation I wouldn't think that it would hurt them.

Also speaking of arro weight... I have heard of an adult aro knocking off a tank top even when it is weighed down with bricks, or milk jugs full of water, or even jars full of change (I bet that was a mess). the only sure-fire way I have found is to use those really cheap c-clamps. A lot of people are against this due to the extra time it adds to tank maintenance... but if you lose even one aro it sux.

luckily my silver aro has never tried to jump out. but just in case i have glass tops with 6- 30" strip lights holding them down. I learned the hard way when my 1st one jumped out of a 2'' square hole the 1st nite I had him.

My aro used to jump/splash a lot at night, so one night I turned all the lights off and sat watching the tank for ages in the dark (could just make out the shilouets of the fish). After a while I noticed my 10" redspot plec swim up to the top of a 2' deep tank and start chasing around my [then] 16" black aro!!! Needles to say the plec went into the lfs the next day....

my silver is about 12 inches and he is quite calm. He does not get spooked easily. It's strange that mine has grown out of his fear of people. But whenever he sees someone , he looks foward to getting a snack. He likes shrimp, sardines and lizards. Especially shrimp!

Ive had plecos like that before. I also had rays that killed a 9-10 inch black aro..
i had it overnight and the next day all i saw were scales.. no bones...
