I bought 3 small flowerhorns at LFT aloha few days ago with $30 each bargain price, thinking FH will stimulate my pbass to swim around instead of gathering at one spot.
WRONG, look at them now. all my pbass were tranced to one side of the tank plus one of them laid tons of eggs this afternoon. Are you kidding me? Are they precocious? I have never heard or seen FH at this size can lay eggs? Maybe they are not flowerhorn.

It's not surprising. I'm sure with all the hormones used to induce breeding it has some affect on the fry's.

Just like PBASS developing humps at such a small size (9-10") and breeding at such a small size. I remember I sold a pair of farmie Monos to a member who bred for him I believe when they were like 10" or so.

Your tank is going to be amazing with all them Kelberi's.

Have you talked to Wes about the Azuls? maybe he can help.

While this is a great looking fish, I would argue that it is not a kelberi.

One of the defining characteristics of kelberi is the presence in adults of small light spots on pelvic and anal fins, and lower lobe of caudal fin. This fish shows none of the above. Granted, this fish may not be adult but it should be showing hints of spotting in the listed fins. I see none.

james... all those kelberi's have spots on the anal & cadual fins bro.... thats what makes a KELBERI...
no need to argue the fact... just have patience, your juviniles are still very young.. in due time bro... in due time... if you dont wanna enjoy the precious momments of them growing up into adults and watching the stages of progression... send them all to me...... ill take care of tthem............haahahahahahahahaha

For those thinking that they might be a race of kelberi that exhibit no spots, I don't think so. The spots are what make kelberi, kelberi.

With that said, I am certainly not arguing that they are not something special.

Keep in mind that even Kullander has stated that the recent revision which added 9 new species is most likely not complete, and that there are probably a number of additional species that need to be described. This particular fish may very well be a an undescribed specie. This is why knowing where your fish were collected from is so vitally important.

i have to say what i have read so far is a great read but just because a 6 inch cichla that is supposed to be a kelberi doesn't have spangling on its lower anal and pelvic fins yet doesn't mean its not a kelberi. as the cichla that is sitting in my tank its now 7 inch or so and is developing spangling on his lower anal fin, soft dorsal and caudal fin as of right now. from being in the game for so long, reading and talking to alot of cichla O.G.s over time, i have came to the conclusion that kelberis develop over time and size and it won't happen over night with every kelberi.. seiichi was telling me that it has alot to do with hormones. it also has a lot to do with water quality, water softness, trace elements, stableness and consistency is unbelievably important and another very important factors is the fish needs to become extremely comfortable in their surroundings. i noticed once my fish started to settle down, his colors started to develop daily along with his fins.. no offense Scat, you know that me and you are cool so please don't take this the wrong way, but your sp. Sao Fransesco are one of a kind and the only kelberi sp. that i have ever seen fully dressed at 5 inches. this doesn't make all the others a false kelberis. if they grow up into adults and they have full spangles on their caudal, soft dorsal, anal and pelvic fins then this is what characterizes them as a sp. kelberi, not how fast they develop.
