Aurea the golden/flash tiger catfish (Brachyplatystoma juruense) growout & color experiment

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
And FINALLY, the new guy imaged through the magic of the Nikon!

Edit-

Have a video, too. It is known that I'm handy with a camera and photoshop, but I can't be accused of doctoring a video. The flash makes a difference in a photo, but this guy is legit even without it...

He/She's gorgeous Rob; congrats on getting your dream fish bro and I wish you all the good luck on your journey together. They're great looking fish and they really nail their tripod stance even when compared to other Pims IMHO.

I've had Jurs before but had no luck with them. Always had problems getting them to eat reliably. I almost guarantee it was my fault in the form of choosing poor tankmate compatability. Even now there's so little info on fish behavior as most profiles are extremely general, That I still struggle to put the right fish together. For instance feeding habits can really affect a comm. Some fish are avid hiders but voracious eaters that they can dominate the food from other reclusive fish that you thought would feed similarly and the reverse can also be true with open water swimmers, etc, etc.

And great pic and vid. Like watching the Jur swimming in the current.

Thank you my friend! This guy is my unicorn, I'm excited to see him grow into his future 550 gallon home :)

I've found brachys to be sensitive creatures who enjoy dying. They don't seem to do well in rowdy communities. The only juruense I've seen get large seem to be those that are the primary bottom feeder in communities that are relatively calm, such as a group of arowanas. My guy is going to be the primary fish for this setup, so nothing else will really be added until he's about a foot.

Certainly a looker. Definitely seems to be comfortable. Have you gotten it to eat yet? What are you trying first?

I haven't tried feeding yet. I was waiting until he got sufficiently comfortable so as to begin displaying feeding behavior. He's started doing that today. Earlier, he was hunting in the current perched on the outflow of the filter, with his snout almost at the surface. I gently broke the surface tension with a finger and wiggled it. He bit me lol.

The first feeding went off well tonight!

I offered him tilapia chunks, which he took greedily. Brachys seem to like eating cichlids, and I've never met one who won't take tilapia basically straight out of the bag.

Also of note is that not only did he eat, he took his first supplement as well.

I'll report more on that later.

Just staying up in the current then, huh?!
