I have kept, collected and bred quite a few Aussie Natives including some great field trips to Far North Queensland, the Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea. One of my firm favourites would be the Coal Grunter which has character and colour and was amoungst the first species I bred with hormone assistance. I once kept some enormous archers (40cm) in a factory style holding room which would bring down cockroaches off the 5m ceiling! King Mudskipper is memorable as they handfeed quickly. I watch the wild lungfish spawn each year and ocasionally hatch out some eggs just for curiosity. I have seen the freshwater shovelnose catfish that chrisdef15 is talking about but they are just a LARGE ugly grey fish. I have helped collect freshwater sawteeth sharks when they were easy to export and watched the QLD DPI fisheries spawn their 2m broodstock barramundi last year.
Guppy, you sem well read so I recommend two excellent books on Australian freshwater fish which are particularly good for aquarists.

I had one of the Desert Gobies not too long ago, but for some reason it didn't thrive and died within a week. During that period all the ones at the LFS also died so I couldn't get another.

any one know how to get one of those giant eel things in the states? I believe they were short finned eels. i was in AU over the summer and they were everywhere! I saw a bunch in a pond in the botanical garden near the opera house in sydney.
