Ok heres the idea!
In less than a month (ooooohh im so excited :headbang2 ) i will buy myself a new tank, well new to me anyway, because im buying it out of the local trader.
I have approx $1000 to spend on tank and accesories.
The tank will be at least 6' long hopefully 7', and im hoping to have at least 30" of depth (as in forward depth not height)
this will equate to around 200-250 Gallons to play with.
Oh and im going to buy the tank with hood, cabinet, filters, heater, lights etc!
I have the substrate and wood all sussed out. I stole a big piece, about 4-5ft, of wood, like a thick tree branch which fell into the water, and became waterlogged, from the local reservior and some other buts of wood too.
The only thing i have to think of now is......you guessed it TANKMATES!

Ok so heres the list i could think of

1x Scleropages Jardini (Jardini Arowana/Saratoga)
1x Toxotes Charateus (7 spot Archerfish)
1x Lutjanus argentimaculatus (Mangrove Jack)
1x Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps (Sailfin Pleco)

Thats all i can think of so far. If any of you have any suggestions/tips please help!
Also, should i have more than one of any species of the fish i have listed? eg 2xMangrove Jack, or Archerfish?

BTW, i am getting all of these fish at the same time, and they will all be Juveniles, hopefully 3" or less!

the archer and jack are bad idea to mee since they need salt

I didnt think that the Archer and Jack "needed" salt.
I thought they would still do fine except that they wouldn't grow as fast as they would in salt, which fish in captivity do not anyway.
Also i have seen many Archer fish in Pure fresh water and they seem to live just fine...

I wouldnt keep a jardini and jack together.

MJ do prefer slightly brackish water once older. A person I know has one that is 40cm+ and he adds 1 table spoon of salt per 20L of water.

1 table spoon per 20l counds about right as a juvie MJ, however, they probably wouldn't mind a little more.

How bout a few barras or silver perch?

Aren't the Jardini arrowanas much more aggressive.. I would imagine having a similiar looking top-dweller in the Archer, would cause some serious aggression issues.

Yeah, the Archer and Jar thing popped up in my head too!
But then i thought to myself that they live in the tropics naturally in the same habitat.
They live in simbyosis, but then again the tank is a completely different environment.
Has anyone else got any suggestions?
I would really like the Jar4 to have some tankmates

I have not kept jardini but they have a rep for agression and I would worry about the archers. The T. chatareus archers do fine in full fresh, esp. if the water is a bit hard, they are not salt reliant like the common archer and they can reach 16", they can also be kept in groups with only squabbles, not real fights.
The mangrove jack can be kept in fresh until it gets to 6-8" long which is only a few months starting at 2-3" then needs increasing salinity and by the time they are 3 years old they head off to the off shore reefs and outer edges of mangrove swamps, by that time they are 18" plus, they are agressive feeders and fight with other mangrove jacks.
