Aussie Native Tank Plan!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here is an alternative set up for you, all Native Aussies!
1 jardini
1 tandanus eelcat
1 golden perch (Macquaria ambigua)
1 Aussie bass (Macquaria novamaculata)
1 rock flagtail (Kuhlia rupestris) (maybe)
3 jade perch (Scortum barcoo)
interestingly all except the barcoo and the Kuhlia can bet caught at a place called Gold Coast City in the Hinze Dam Lake.

I like guppy's idea, some sweet fish there and they are all native. I am doing a native tank as well only I live in the U.S. so mine is a bit different. :)

Cant catch jardini at that Hinze either. I think.

Just leichardti. Been there before and tryed but came away with nothing. It was winter though so im will try this summer.

But like guppy said, I would go with some grunters and perch. Maybe ditch the jardini plan.

Sorry, wrong aro, they are apparently the leichardti, The article just said aro and I did not look closely at the tiny picture, it was this one,
so replace the jardini with a spotted leichardti and you still have a 100% australian tank full of impressive fish, According to the literature the tandan and the aro both can reach 36", the aussie bass and the golden perch over twenty inches, the Kuhlia jungle perch gets to 16-18 inches and IMO looks even better as an adult, and the barcoos, which feed fill the same dietary niche as plecos, get to 14". I guess that i quite a load for a 250g tank, probably have to make a choice between the macquaria.

Yeah Guppy Cheers! You're a champ, i love it when you get into a thread lol.
I might think into getting some of the non brackish fish, but i HAVE to get the Jardini, it is my dream.
The Grunters (Barcoo etc) would be a good idea, the only thing i was unsure about was the golden or silver perch as they are from the Murray river which is coldwater.
This could turn out ok as the Jardini would grow at a normal rate at normal temperature but the perch would grow faster due to warmer temperatures.
Also i need this pleco! i love Sailfins!
I'll think long and hard about this and get back to you later today.

I just checked on some aquaculture stats and found that the jardini can live in water down below 60 degrees F, and the Kulia up to 80 degrees F. but neither are real happy at the extremes, the goldens easily adapt up to around 86 degrees F. as for the eeltail, they apparently can adapt to living in a wet sock in the sun, I just like those guys. You drool for the jardini, then you need to get a jardini, Any of those fish seem large and sturdy enough not to be bullied without trying to kill it. And if anyone says the sailfin is not from ausralia just say it is a naturalized citizen.
