AutoZone Fires Worker Who Stopped Robbery

You better stop going to Home Depot and WalMart too, then. They both have same policy. Most big chains do.

That's right Rodger and there was a thread discussing a similar situation a year or so ago....I'm sure company policies are carefully thought out and decided on...to protect the company from liability and litigation but in an increasingly lawless world some exceptions should be made.Helluva time of year to terminate a guy for doing what he thought was right...How many out there would be willing to face down an armed intruder?..In this town the robbers usually come in blasting while shouting demands and one of those employees could have been killed....Very dangerous times.

Corporations are so idiotic. They're worried about getting sued rather than saving lives. And if they lose any money, then it's also the store's fault.

Yeah, a local Home Depot fired two employees recently for stopping a shoplifter. No guns... They just told the guy to stop as he walked out the door. It got them fired...

Interesting, the HD's around here have paramilitary looking security officers at the entry points to stop would be theives. These guys have sidearms, they wear all black and BDU pants bloused in their boots...The way these guys look it would take a pretty desperate crook to try and get hot hammer past one of them.

I am not for more gun control, but the guy got fired for bringing a gun into the store - not for saving the day. I have known enough crazies that pack that I don't want to work where they allow the employees to pack. If he would have left the gun outside he wouldn't have been fired. At least that is what I understand about what happened. Correct me if I am wrong. I used to work in the hood where all of the 3rd shift guys carried. The local cops told them if they ever had to shoot someone to not call them, just take them a block away and dump them in the river.

the guy brought the gun in to stop the robber. a gun would be easier to use to stop a bad person instead of using an oil filter or a spare tire

Yeah but he very likely would not have saved the day had he not returned to the store with his weapon....What would the point have been for him to stand outside the building with it?...It's why I said that there should be some wiggle room in the policies for exceptions....Some of those protesters,or maybe even PEP BOYS should help him out with employment.

Haha, yeah. Some of ours have regular security guards, most have none. The ones that do definitely aren't packing anything more than a whistle. I think those guys are just there to get a license plate # if need be.

I spoke to one of them on the way out and he told me that the company he works for only uses former law enforcement officers.

Exactly. Instead of firing him on "policy", they should have used this as an example to point out the obvious flaw in the policy and possibly modify the policy. Standing outside would have been pointless, and his ex-manager might be dead right now if he did. I'm sure it was someone farther up the corporate ladder that fired him, but I wonder why his manager couldn't put in a good word for him.
Haha... A thought just popped in my head. Imagine if the district manager called the store and told the store manager to fire the guy that just saved his life. How do you deal with that?

Whomever made the decision to fire that courageous guy should be ashamed of themselves. They could have at least given him a severance package. I hope the manager does everything he can to help him out.

This reminds me of the Zero Tolerance policies in public schools.
