ok, as someone who has imported for years I have a little experience here, the variable as tremendous depending on where the fish come from, ie. Asian, most expensive, Colombia, not to bad (is close to us), Uruguay, most expensive in this hemisphere, different parts of Brazil charge different prices, also depends on how many fish that certain supplier put into a box, I got a 25" plus Adonis Pleco a few years ago, I did not sell it for near the top end of your scale. I think I sold him for $175 plus shipping, and made money.

Thanks for chiming in Ken. Like I said, I don't have many of the larger fish data points. This can skew the data. If I remove the discus outliers (5" at $150) it increases my R-squared to about .82 and drops the cost of a 22" fish to $400. If I had more data it would be more accurate for sure! Any way you'd chime in on what you'd think it would cost to import a 20"+ cichlid?

Here is the thing about shipping I see that is not understood here is that the more u bring in the cheaper it gets !!! Yes if I was to bring in let's say 1 22" dovii the shipping catching cost and import papers would cost more than what I could see the fish for but I go in with another guy and we bring in up to 30 -40 boxxes at a time and we use accounts that have been open for almost 40 years now anybody in biz knows the more u ship the better rate u get so here is some matt for u 39 years of being a known shipper and shipping around 500+ boxxes a year gets u what rate ? Ahh yes a cheaper rate than the average joe smoe ! Now I have to b up in a few hours to pack more fish so That people like this guy that started this thread has something to do with their boring ass lives ! Good night!

I agree there are adult "wild" fish on the market that were pond raised in Florida, and sold at higher prices than they should be, only time I have questioned anyone in public was when they sold fish from a collection location I know they had never been too and very few people ever had, but I was on almost all the collections of that particular species. But, that said, your equation is way off on what it cost to import, you take the total import cost, divide by the cost of the entire shipment, then you get a cost of shipping per dollar value and price from there, if you get say 50 boxes in a shipment it greatly reduces your cost per dollar value of the fish.

What commercial importer do you use in Nicaragua? It was my understanding that there isn't a commercial fish exporter in Nicaragua, which is why Jeff went down and hand collected the ones he imported. I could very well be wrong though.

I just sent 4 double boxxes to Philippines weight was around 50p per box delta airlines ! Shipping $154 ! Where are u guys getting these crazy ass shipping charges ? The more u ship the cheaper it is guys come on man this is not hard ! I can't even believe I have to explain this !

I don't give out sourses bud! Really? And they weren't shipped from nic they were collected in nic ! Lol I don't care where they got them from down there as long as they look like they do !! I see u are calling me a lier and it really chaps myass ! Let me ask u where do u think I just pulled 20 monster dovii from ?? Lol the magic canals of fl lmao !!! Wait I grew them in my pool ! Lol whatever

Gage, go to bed, this ain't worth getting worked up over, let's just educate them, works better if the people with experience help those that do not.
On Jeff's prices, Jeff is a great guy, known him for years, been on a collecting trip together, his fish are top notch and are always from where he says they are from and if he says it's wild, it's wild, but he's a businessman who has a family to feed, and if he can get more for a nice fish because of his excellent reputation, then hell yeah! so using his pricelist is causing you to skew your top end of your chart

Fair enough. Makes sense. Thanks Ken.

This was an interesting read. I would be very curious (although admittedly, such an exercise would be even more time consuming) to find such graphs for *individual* species. I hope I am saying this right: A wild, and rarer fish, would cost more, than a wild but abundantly available fish. Existence of such a graph for individual fish, would really be nice to compare across vendors, and more meaningful.

If the thread doesn't go to a personnal level this could be an educational discuession. Otherwies it will have to be closed, continue for now.
