average fire eel growth rate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that is some slow growth i have plenty of time then...i will be on the look out for a fire eel again...

I have heard males stay small 18" and females get big 30"+. Has any one else heard this?

I have had one in my 400gal for 2 years and it reached 14 or 15" in the first year and pretty much stopped growing. As I really want a 3' one, I bought 3 more in June. One of the three new ones is growing slow like the first one I bought and the other two have gone from 6" to over a foot in the 3 months.

Any truth to males stay small, females get large?

my 3 fire eels are pigs.. my TT is a pig.. and my peacocks are pigs... My Fire eels deffinately have grown the fastest w/ my TT comeing in second.. then the peacocks. my 3 fire eels where all just over the 12" mark when I got them. They are now all pushing the 24" mark 'cept one but 'm not sure if it is a sexual difference or a dominance issue. I do very heavy WCs weekly 2 25%+ wcs a week to be exact. and they share their tank w/ an Oscar, a royal pleco, and a needle nose fish. and it's been between 6-8 monthes since i've had them. They are fed daily, and fed to satation. they get no food for 2 days now on the weekend and 5 days straight of all they can eat in a sitting. They grow big and they grow fast feed well. my TT was approx 5-6" when I got him and he's maybe pushing 12" now.. I'de hazard more like 10".. slightly smaller then the fire eels when I first got them.

the fire eel get to 36" :D i have one thats 18" right now.

The answer is "I do not know" there is very little documentation i'm aware of about these fish being captive bred, or any real study into their sexual differences. There have been reports of spawning, but as far as I'm aware no successful rearing of the young. Or even if the eggs where viable.

I have noticed my largest one is very aggressive towards one of the smaller 2. and will likely need to seperate the smaller guy out as they all age 'n get mature. It is not uncommon to hear of these fish being highly aggressive to their own species, 'nore is it uncommon to have a peaceful trio of these.

Has anyone got one that swims in daytime ? Mine hides and he is awesome looking so its a shame
depends on tank set up really my fire eel (whichsadly died of ich and i going to get another this weekend) was always at the top + hand feeding in two days on my tank (6 inches), only cos there was a lot of dithers and 20=30 hiding spaces he was straight up top whenever i camme near lol i miss him

p.s. i get the feeling this one wont be as awesome as my first one =^(

my fire eel has what i think are growth spurts she will start eating a lot for a few days and then i swear bam she is 2 inches longer. ive had her 1 year she has grown 11 inches or so i think she doesnt sleep in the day only come out at night she spends half the day swimming around some time i can tell she is sleeping when she looks spaced out but i give her a lot of attention she really seems to like it when i tickle her tummy it looks like she is having an oragasm its really funny!!!!
