thanks guys. Going to paint bottom, both sides and back of tank black.. Will add sand and a single nice piece of driftwood with some stones around it to serve as a "nesting spot" temp will be mid 80s and with signs of any breeding behavior temp will drop as they do in nature. I will either keep the leaves that buffer Ph or buffer it myself to around 6 for this project...

Michael, google -Scientist study spawning cichla ,It talks about how a very high percentage of the Mono nest beds they studied are built around sticks or a single stick extending out of the bottom to the surface. they probably lay alot of eggs on the sticks .

My male gets a "redly" kok arround spring (now) when the sun shines allot in the tank.
I heard and saw so much about breeding substrate, so no idea what would work best.
