BA tetras with big cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been lucky with my congo tetras I put in with my ca/sa community. Only lost one and it was the smallest of the lot so didn't care much. Started with six and I'm at five now. I think you just have to keep all the other fish WELL fed and they leave them alone.

mmm why not net out the poor buggers and let them survive...? you already know they're getting eaten up so that's just kinda cruel and a waste of money at the same time...
you really don't need dithers for cichlids that large and outgoing.

Yeah I tried netting them out earlier but they were too fast and two openings at the top of the tank aren't very big so it prevented me from reaching the corners for them. Will try again tomorrow maybe while they are eatting.

Not really cruel imo. Fish eat fish. I would let them finish the job but I guess that's me. Just take it as lesson learned and don't try it again.

Being eaten is not the cruelty. The cruelty comes with the stress of living in fear of being eaten.

That's kind of the whole point of dither fish. Usually that is what makes them school together. Safety in numbers out of fear of being eaten. Anyway what is he gonna to with the 5 left. Might as well keep his other fish happy and full :D

the point of dither fish is to allow shy fish to come out and also to minimize or reduce aggression. if you want to feed your fish live fish that's one thing. like it was pointed out earlier, the cruelty comes in keeping fish in the confines of an aquarium knowing full well and expecting that they will be eating and not giving a crap about it.
to each their own.

The tetras are no longer in the tank. My intentions were to just try adding a group of schooling fish to minimize some aggression issues. I had read that these BA tetras could be a good option and had a giftcard to Petsmart where these guys were a buck each so that's why I attempted this. Had no intentions on being cruel but didn't bother me either if they became a meal for my other fish. I liked the movement they added to the tank and they were pretty happy to have all the tank space to swim around in but unfortunately most if them didn't last in the tank.

Lesson learned.
