A dog doesnt bite a baby on its head for the hell of it, that's like saying all black People steal. When dogs move their babbies around it's near the neck /head area. seriously What do you want us to do with our pets? Just simply not keep a domesticated animal? do you put faith or trust into anything? That's part of being human you know...to me a different species relationship is an Amazing thing. Here you have another organism that's not even closely related to you and will love you unconditionaly.

Never leave ANY dog with any baby unattended. Regardless of breed.

Having said that pitbulls are awesome family dogs IF they are trained properly and are excercised. They have a ton of energy which if not expelled can lead to nipping, jumping, and any other bad behavior. If you don't have time to train the puppy I'd say its best to give her up. Raising a pitbull puppy is no joke.

I have a newborn daughter and 2 pitbulls as her guardians from boys :D

Pits were know as family dogs back in the day. Petey from the Little Rascals was a pit.

Hello; I am afraid that much of your response is confusing except that you will not check out the site that you are dismissing. Again it is not my information, but it does seem very compelling.

I have not owned a pitbull. The last dog I had was a siberian husky.

My point is not matter the dogs breed like any animal they have instincts and the humans in each account triggered something in the dog to attack. Just like when I was a child and got bit by my dads dog .dropping the bone or not leaving it there for the dog to eat triggered the attack on myself. Humans play at part in everything. That account of the newborn is very sad but like the others said the dog must have thought it was a threat. My pit never once looked at my son like that. When she first approached my son her whole emotion and expression changed . She went from joyful and playing to protect mode in seconds.
also you keep bringing up these accounts but you your self have never owned a pit bull. i myself i had atleast 12 dogs and 10 were pitbulls. all were good dogs even chino witch was feed gun powder as a puppy and was trained to fight.he started to go insane with age. even he knew his limits and never attacked a human. not even my baby brother witch was born around the time i had to put him down. i have pictures of him sleeping with my little brother in the bed and my mom is laying next to them and my mom was never a dog person but she loved chino and it hurt the entire family when he was put down. even in his intense mental state the only hes ever attacked in the 5 years i had him was my sisters beloved hello kitty stuffed animal.

Hello; What I want from owners of potentially dangerous pets of any kind is to keep them securely under control at all times. Keep them somehow confined to your own property in some manner and not running loose. Have secure fencing or some other means of making sure they cannot get out, not like the broken fence that allowed an attack on a ten year old child around here.
When you take them off your property have them on a stout lead at all times. Never let them run free. Use a muzzle when walking them in a crowd.
Take steps to warn and protect people that may have reason to visit your property. Put the dog in a secure room or something. I have been made very uncomfortable when visiting the property of friends with large dogs.

As far as how you decide to deal with your dogs and you own family members on your property, that is entirely up to you. I feel that whatever risk level you are willing to expose the very young and old with to be your own business.

Hello; Never the less, this did indeed happen. I do not know why that dog killed the newborn. Some in this thread have posted possible reasons/explainations but it is not clear how to know what may trigger such an attack at a particular time.

It would be useful if you can explain to the rest of us how to judge which dog is likely to do this and when such an attack may happen. You do seem to simply be suggesting that we all rely on only "faith" and "trust". A possible extension of this is perhaps that we just accept a few random killings of people as a part of the process when the "faith" and "trust" breaks down.

I do not see how any of my comments in this thread could lead to your comment about black people and stealing. I am not trying to paint all dogs with the same brush, not even all pit bulls. However, fatal dog attacks do happen.
It also seems that essentially six (59%) out of every ten fatal dog attacks over the study period was from pit bulls. I do not expect you to like the apparent fact that of all the dogs that have done so or are capable of fatal attacks, 59% were pit bulls. That seems significant to me.

First of all, I love dogs. I work at a pet store, I see them all day long. I will also say I am scared of unleashed large dogs. Even though your dog is perfect and completely friendly to strangers. It should be leashed around others. Some people are deathly afraid of large dogs, who I feel very bad for because I see so many irresponsible dog owners who let their dogs run wild, run up to people, even jump up on people. The root of the pitbull hate in America stems from the irresponsible owners.

Even though your dog "won't hurt a fly" yet is super protective, which are completely contradicting by the way, and I've heard it a few times here... Anyways, even though your dog probably won't ever bite the hand that feeds it, (the current family) when you bring a new born fragile baby home, you throw that argument out the window, and all your left with is trusting your dog won't test their own curiosity with the only tool they have, their mouth. Of course all breeds of dogs can be raised along side a baby, just certain pre cautions are needed.

Hello; Here is a link to one of the reports on the dog bite site. In this report they say that in a period from 2006 to 2008 pit bulls alone were responsible for 59% of all fatal dog attacks.

http://www.dogsbite.org/dogsbite-newsroom-2009-dogsbite-three-year-fatality-study.php

I have a hard time believing this statistic because half of the pit bull attacks that are reported in my area don't show a picture of the dog, and half of the reports that do show pictures the dogs are not pitbulls, but usually some type of lab. Because of the inaccuracy in the reports that are easily checked, I don't trust the reports that they don't provide any verification of.

Every time I have been attacked or threatened by a dog it was by a yellow lab that is normally tied up in the yard that broke its rope. I would trust a well trained and taken care of Pitbull over a tied up neglected dog of any breed.
