Damn the irony of life.... why couldnt i pick a different career choice when i was a kid like fireman or something, but no i had to develop a love for animals. Its funny how its easier to become a doctor and work on people then it is to be a vet and work on their pets. Id rather have a vet take care of me then an actual doctor :)

vets gotta know more... doctors only work with humans....vets work with everything else
I went through a lot of different career choices before finally settling on vet heh... was meant to be I suppose. I had always wanted to be a vet but was sure I couldn't do it for a number of reasons... so much schooling goes into it...and then it can be extremely depressing at times.. i wasn't sure that i would be able to put something to sleep or do a surgery or something that didn't work in the end. but i think the good will out weigh the bad. Always thought i was to sensitive and emotional to actually work with sick or dying animals but when it comes to it... if an animal is in need i don't hesitate (if i know what to do) and i just jump in and get to it without paying attention to the emotional side. not to say that i am cold and uncaring, not at all, but that i am focused on getting this animal better if at all possible...

Before this though I was dead set on becoming a forensic pathologist heh... dissecting and testing dead people to see what killed em. very different field. I met an exotic vet on face book and talked to him quite a bit. he would always tell me stories of his work and all the cool stuff he did and one day i just thought to myself "Man I wish i could do that! .....wait... why CAN'T I do that?"
and like something out of a movie I have this enlightening moment and decided I WILL do that....
Feels very right :)

wow forensic pathology is actually my back up career. In high school i was in criminal justice for 4 years while at the same time doing medical. Thats kind of funny.

I dont really remember why i originally wanted to be a vet cause ive wanted to be one since i was 6 years old. I have many reasons why i want to be one now. Plus its a passion of mine, I actually connect a lot better with animals then i do people. Plus while volunteering at animal care and control for my internship i saw so many horrible things that i just cant stand to think about. Its horrible what people do to animals. There was one instance where a guy threw a puppy out the window of his car on I-95 going 90mph, it died 3 hours later, another kid tied paper bags to a stray cats feet and cut off the circulation causing its feet to lose blood flow resulting in its feet getting amputated. I literally have a hundred stories like this. All these things just made me want to help them so much and find ways to save them and not put them down. Only real problem i have is whether or not to go into private practice.

that is horrible :( That is one reason I want to be a vet as well..even if i work for a zoo as i hope to I still want to help out animal rescues that deal with that sort of thing.....
evil evil people in this world....

Its pretty bad here in south florida... people do the most bizarre things. What really gets me though is the fact that if your illegally here and you hurt an animal nothing happens, they dont even get kicked out of the country. In fact animal care and control thinks that they're wasting money by trying to go after these people so they dont. Its so messed up, and more than 70% of the animal crimes are committed by illegals. EVIL!

how is that possible? if they are there illegally and get caught for a crime like that... how do they not get deported? I mean.... they are in the hands of the law at the point.....
I mean I personally have no problem with immigrants, illegal or not...they do the jobs we don't want to...but if they are doing something like that something should happen..... it is punishable by law so how do they get off???

Animal care and control decides whether or not to prosecute them, they would rather save there money to help the animals they can then to go after the ones responsible. If it is a big enough crime though they will go after them like trying to smuggle cocaine using their dog. Apparently though beastiality isnt that big of a crime. My first day working there we had a dead dog come in and while doing the autopsy there was dirt in its stomach in huge clumps and there was vaginal tearing like sever tearing. Basically some woman from Ecuador either had a boyfirend who raped the dog or she used a strap on... were not sure since there was no semen. All the woman even had was a piece of paper with her name and where she was from thats it! Next day they decided not to charge her with anything cause they said it would be pointless. They're freaking nuts! I would have made her eat dirt after starving her for 13 days like she did to her dog. I would have charged her with everything that i could get away with. I hate the way things are run down here, its so ****** up!

Never heard of anything that extreme when I lived in Florida. I must say I did hear of a lot more animal abuse when I lived in Florida, can't say that the finger was pointed at any one group of people more than another though.

One extreme thing I did hear about was a guy that kept a lot of exotic hots in south Florida. Most of them escaped and they had quite a time catching them all and keeping the public from panicking. As far as I know no one was bitten.

This went off topic fast.

Ps fire fighting ain't easy. Its not an easy or simple job and I'm offended that u try to make seem like it is. And a docter is still more trained than a vet sry to break it to u. Most are not even trained on how to work on most animals. Most deal with simple pets hence the existence of exotic vets.
Sure it might be hard to become a vet but a doc is harder, and requires more.

True that about the firemen. I have a friend that tried taking the test to become a fireman but he failed it 3 times. It is a lot more difficult than people think. It's not all stripper poles and spraying hoses....:grinno:

As for the vet vs. doctor- Vet school has a higher drop out rate than medical school and I think that becoming a vet would be more difficult but I can't say for sure.
