Hey guys i'm planning to breed bettas I have just about everything set up just one question before i actually conduct the deed when the fry are born i don't think i would be able to get microworms due to my location and lack of car, could i feed them finely crushed up flakes instead?

I do not think so, they are way to tiny. What you can do though is feed them "green water" from say a soaking piece of drift wood. Just give it enough time to collect some algae.

at school i'm not going to be able to get that kind of resource, i've heard pieces of hardboiled egg yolk would work, is that true?

I never tried feeding my betta fry egg, but I have heard that also. you would want to make sure it is super finely ground and then mix it with a little water before adding it in. well that's what i would do anyway.

I fed crushed up flakes to my betta fry, but of course that was 15 yrs ago. There's got to be more options now..........

boil up an egg... take the yolk out and mash it up with a little bit of there tank water..strain it threw a fine cloth..like a really fine net and drip a tiny bit in to the tank they will gobble it up.

make sure to not over feed it ill dirty the water quickly, also try getting some blood worms and letting them thaw..dump in just the juice..its what i did for ...2-3 batches of fry and it worked great.

you will lose some to this method some fry just will not take to non living food but..in my opinion the strongest or most able to adapt survive^_^

there are some food for fish fry on the market finely ground up powders ..just take a variety of fish foods and mash them with a mortar and pestle ..( i used my counter top and a flat rock) until its an extremely fine powder.

good luck with your fry

You need to give the fry a variety. A piece of egg yolk about the size of a grain of rice mixed in water will work too. However, for the first 3 or 4 days they will be so small they will need to feed on infusoria. Infusoria can be made by taking some water from a planted tank and add some dead aquatic leaves. Let the water sit in a well lit area for a few weeks. The water will cloud and stink but after some time it will clear back up and you will have thousands of microscopic infusoria in your water. After about a week you can feed them vinegar eels. You can buy these and micro worms online. Depending on their size at about 2 weeks you can feed them baby brine shrimp. You can eventually wean them on to golden pearl fry food when they get older. I highly suggest these foods as egg and powder foods alone are not sufficient. Liquid fry food won't cut it either.i. Best of luck to you.

i found that bb result in a lot of swim bladder problems, and i lose more fry later in growth with feeding them...but thats just what i have seen.

Yeah, bbs are easy to feed and grow so it is easy to overfeed them to the fry and develop the swim bladed issues. I find they encourage growth but the fry must have a varied diet.
