Baby Bowfin

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i realize this is an older post but how are the little guys doing? i've tried keeping little ones before and i know about the dropping like flies thing. 3 3" babies both times, they lasted less than a month.i'm getting 3 4-6" ones from TFD on Wed. all the ones i had before ate just fine. but just started dying. this time they are going in a 75 with a penguin 330, and a 300 gph canister and NO heater! the tank temp is 68 to 70F and has 2 large bubble wands on standby.Driftwood river stones and hornwort. the thing about the parasites is the last time i had some they were treated with Prazipro as soon as i got them and i still lost them. thinking the temps were too high. probably 76+.these guys are gonna be bigger and well started. Joe (TFD) told me he's had them a few Months and grown them from 2 -2 1/2 ".Sooooo, wish me luck.these guys are as close as i'll ever come to owning a snakehead again, and i just love them! like a snakehead and knife all in one.

Bud, I bought 4 ~2.5-3" from TDF(Joe) and they are doing great now at 5-6"!!! However, from the start, I had issues on feeding them. Joe told me that he was feeding them rosie but when I put rosies in, these guys wood play w/ em and sometime eat them but most often, there were just floating dead bodies around. I tried Blood worms, live black worms to no avail!! I then went to Walmart and bought night crawlers..they loved it. Their belly is enormous and I guess we can always train them to eat other stuff later but we do have to recognized that these are wild caught and a simple bait worm such as night crawlers can save their life!!! My tank is very simple for these guys..33gal, air stone w/ spong filter at 76-78' feed them 2 worms(twice a day)..water changes every other day..Goodluck. Will get picks post of updates later!!

so you picked up yours from Joe too. and haven't lost any? GOOD NEWS!!! I've always been able to get fish to eat, but unexplained deaths.....I've had my share.
Joe says they're 4-6" now and feeding on rosies and comets. wish me luck and can't wait to see pics of yours.

my guy is looking similar to that now his color seems to be changing a little probably around 5" or so....i got him on the baby feeders from petsmart...only thing i can get him to eat....eats themm fine but doesnt seem to be growing too fast...i usually by 20 to 30 of them and toss them in there and wait till there are none left to re stock... I got no heat...he is in a half full 70 gallon tank with a sponge filter and an AC 70. Doing fine and healthy also heard they dont like light at all when their young so i put some stuff to block the sun from the balcony and he seems to chill right in the shade next to the sponge filter... Any morequestions leviathion13 just pm ME!!

had my 3 in the 75 for 1 1/2- 2 wks now and they've gone through about 20 goldfish and about 35 rosies and now they're working on killing a flat pack of frzn krill. they're doin' great! tank's been staying 70-75F and if the temp starts to creep up too much i run a small fan on top of the tank.they deffinately have an easier time catching feeders when the lights are out at night.they're pretty much staying full all the time. i'm really happy with them.

awesome thanks for the update i may add a little heat to my tank then....

UPDATE!!!!!!! just tried and got him on smelts...looks like no more feeders and hompefully soon pellets
