baby gar feeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok i will give all the details soon actually i was trying to upload pictures but the past few weeks i am having problems in uploading pictures

details might actually be more useful than pics in helping you right now, although the latter might also shine a light on things we might have missed. if you're having issues with uploading on mfk, look here, or upload via www.imageshack.us and paste the links here.

I've found that my young longnose gar tend to only eat large quantities of food at night. I add feeders after getting home from work while their tank light is on, but they usually don't eat more than one or two of the feeders. However, when I count the remaining feeders in the morning, I find that there are a ton of feeders gone, and the gar have very full stomachs.

In addition to the info xander requested, the species of the gar could help determine what to feed the gar at it's current size.

true, but with the snakehead, there's a good chance it is or it will be outcompeted for food.

forgot that, king, do add the species of gar as well.

yes try feeding at night may get more of a feeding response from the little guy...

my tank is 93cm long
my blue snakehead is about 11cm
my gar ( i dont know what spieces) is 9 or 10 cm long
they eat blood worms and feeder guppies but only the snakehead does
i had both of they for about nearly 2 weeks

even on imageshak i am not able to to upload pics :((

gar could be a shortnose gar as it looks somewhat different than the typical Florida gar. i would rule out spotted and longnose and Atractosteus genus gars.

the snakehead is going to outcompete that gar...i would separate the two or massively flood the tank with feeders to make sure the gar gets some food...the former is the better move, latter could lead to problems if you get a mass-feeder die off, etc.

good luck and keep us posted on how the fishes do--
