Heres the filters,these are all DIY built by my friend and i,they comprise of two settlemend chambers at either side with a huge biological area in the middle(media is Lytag balls)the cheapest and best media in my opinion if your doing things on a grand scale.The rest of the filter is made up of filter plates and sponges to deal with the mechanical waste.The filter is running off air via a ring main across the roof of the fish house,airlines are tapped off it,i use a turbine blower to power the whole system,it runs me 15 very large tanks using only 150Watts....i can live with that....if anyone would like to see a picture of the fish house then just say.

Forgot to mention,the baskets in the top of the filter have large coral gravel in them,a vital addition for me as the water where i live has a very low KH ,low mineral content,this prevents any sudden Ph crash....something ive suffered in the past..... to my expense!!!!!

thats great info . and a great pic too not sure how you have the water flowing through the filter . id be interested to see more and of the fish house too .

the filter looks like something i would like to have a play with on a smaller scale

Take a look at the bottom filter plates(white in colour),theres a void, here there is a vacuum created by a right angle piece at the far end settlement chamber which is attached to the long black pipe across the (top) back of the tank.The down pipe(out of the picture) has 3 airlines that run vertically down the pipe in the same way as a normal uplift on a undergravel system which generally only has one airline to run it.Water is forced up the tube by three powerful airlines causing a vacuum under the plated beneath the media,the two drilled pieces of clear perspex are where the heavy solids gather for easy cleaning when syphoning.
Hope this clarifies things,its a little difficult to explain.
Really simple system,you can place heaters in either settlement chamber also which eliminates heater burns.

Heres me in action......bloody water changes hey!!......hard work but no substitute in my opinion,i change a third on all tanks twice per week,good job i have an angel that helps me most of the time.

The fish house is nowhere near work,at least 20 miles away at my house....maybe one day hey.
That ray could be one of many,theres a few in that tank,all Marbles......you dont miss much,i hadnt spotted that myself..lol!!
