thanks for the info aquaman . and thanks for going to the trouble of the pics and explaining :)

do you think that media would work well in a canister such as an fx5 ? im guessing that if scintered glass would be better in a canister as many use . then you would have used it in your set up maybe ?

i guess im asking why you chose that media and not scintered glass like siporax ( surface area ? cost ? something else ? )

i know that sounds negative but its not at all . just looking for otpions on filtration .

you change a third at once.

is that straight from the tap or from a storage tank?

with all those tanks im guessing straigth from the tap but that sounds like alot of water to change all at once that way ?

Yes Gaz straight from the tap! using a water conditioner. This is quite excessive all at once..your right, however im blessed with good water from the tap and i feed well making regular and substantial changes a must.In the winter months when temperatures are low i tend to reduce feeding and do smaller changes, say a quarter so as not to drop the temp so much, the fish house is space heated so it takes longer for the tanks to reach the desired temp,in extreme cold periods i add heaters to the systems to bring the temp up quicker.Ive done this for too many years to remember and its worked for me.(Note )This method is not recommended for people housing other species such as Clown loaches,Flagtail prochilodus etc, these fish are far more sensative to sudden temp change and could and probably will develop white spot (Ick)....not something you want in a Ray tank, for this reason my rays are kept in species tanks only....with the exception of an Asian Arow which permanently has a heater in the settlement chamber,Asian Arows are sensative to cooler water for long periods, ive experienced temporary gill curl with this species which was quickly rectified as soon as the temp was raised......but thats another subject.

very interesting info . thanks :)

what water conditioner do you use ? years ago i used a pond conditioner in small quantities

how do you ad the conditioner ? dilute it in a jug and slowly add it during a water change ? or just tip it straight in the tank . so many capfulls type of thing

sorry for what seems like a daft question but id still like to know lol

Lytag is very cheap but also porous, whether or not it is anywhere near the surface area of Siporax is debatable,i think probably not! however ive used it over many years and its without doubt very good media,if you only have a Fx 5 or similar to fill then you might want to go with the Siporax or something similar, theres lots of good media on the market these days. The fact i have many thousands of pounds worth of Rays in my collection, some of which i could never replace if anything went wrong with the filter system must show how much confidence i have in this product.
Water straight from the tap using declor from a syringe, not ideal but again ive always done it this way and had good results, with 3 kids 2 large dogs also theres only so much time in one day.
Cheers!

"only have a fx5 to fill " ? hmm. you mean because you use this on so many tanks i assume ? iether that or the filter sections you showed are much bigger than i realise

i dont have many thousands of pounds of rays unfortunatily and id probably never sleep at night if i did. i have 3 fx5s funning my ray tank. 3 airstones and 2 hearters that never seem to come on ( yes they work . but the tank just stays warm ) .

however im allways interested in new ideas and new filtration types , new methods etc. i love the fish i have and i expect to have them for a long time to come .

your obvoiusly experienced so i value your opinion sorry for all the questions

you have a link that shows your ray colletion ?

p.s. i have 3 kids and two dogs lol
