Baby Oscar Hardships

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This might sound really dumb and obvious, but have you tried feeding him flakes? I had this problem with my new baby solver arowana. The lfs said they fed him crickets and pellets, but when I got him home, he didn't touch either of them. So I tried to starving him out until he took the pellets and he went 4 days with no food so I got worried. Then out of curiousity I threw some flakes in there and he just inhaled them. So, it might be that your oscar is too small to recognize anyhting other than flakes. I really doubt lfss feed their tiny fish anything other than flakes so give them a try.

I tried normal flakes and spirulina, nothing... He is suspending behind the overflows right now, he splits his time between there and laying on the gravel. The temp is 82, water params are perfect, lights are on less than an hour a day. Hopefully he pulls through.... I don't know what else to try

:nilly:

Some Oscars are more emotional than others, just give him some more time.

Is the tank well aerated? When the temp goes up, oxygen goes down and it could stress him. Mine will do that too where they are kind of listless, added aeration and cooled temp from 82/84 to 80 and they perked right up

I run two Whisper 30-60s HOBs and they do a good job of breaking the surface up. I have a spare pump and an airstone I will toss in. Anything is worth a shot at this point. Thanks for the tip. I'll keep you posted and we will see if there is any improvement when I get home from work & school today.

Good luck. I really hope the little guy pulls through.

I agree with the temp being turned down. You brought him home and treated him for ick by changing his whole environment including water parameters. You've done well to keep him going. But, if your ick is gone turn the temp down. I keep my O in 78. I love these guys and I hope all your good effort is rewarded.

Well I got home tonight and my fiance told me that she saw him swimming more activley and biting at the gravel, I tried feeding both flakes and micro pellets but the guy seemed uninterested. He is just laying on the gravel once again. The temp is at 80 now. Hopefully he will find some sunken pellets and eat a little. I'll keep ya posted

AND BTW I tossed in an airstone to keeps things more aerated, but I am almost certain the oxygen level is the least of my worries. The surface was constanly being broken by the HOBS.

Don't forget to let us know how the little guy gets on.

Steve
