Welll I also a good trick is to slap whatever your feeding off of the top of the water and usually the Cichla will snatch it 
I have cut up trout once.. My opinion and experience with feeding dead fish is slice it so it is like you steak strips Long and not real thick. If slappin it doesn't work .. usually the flashing of the skin while falling will result in an instictual snatch action
Oh and in my experience dead fish is the cheapest way to get good food in their guts :0 But can be the messiest and most annoying as well
