My Umbee breeding project.

Since my male (14" at the time) is significantly larger that my female(4" at the time I bought her), for her safety I placed a divider between them. At the time I had 3 umbees in a 300 gallon tank all separated by a divider.

I bought my female at about 4". She started laying eggs at ~5". I have been conditioning her since I had her. I have and continue to fed her and the male a varied diet of beef heart, worms, store bought shrimp, and pellets. I have had her for about 4 months now and she is currently about 8".
She layed eggs 3 times with me and this batch (batch #3) was the first one ever fertilized. I had 2 males ( 11" and 14") at the time I bought her and they paid no attention to her and she layed eggs (batch #1)-none hatched. The two males were always trying to fight each other through the divider. Once I sold my smaller male, the other male (14") started to pay more attention to her. On her 2nd batch of eggs, the eggs were not fertilized and turned white. I continued to condition her and the male during this time. On her 3rd batch of eggs it was successfully fertilized. At this point, there aren't as many fry's in the tank. I am thinking that the ones that swam over to the fathers side yesterday and today got eaten. There are about 10 fry's left swimming by the female, hopefully I can raise a few.

I hope this helps you with your project.

Very cool thanks for the reply.Did you leave the divider up and let him do his thing from his side.I have all my divided and plan on pulling the divider once her tube starts to drop.

The divider was up the whole time. I did a water change last week vaccuming the bottom of the tank not knowing the frys survived. The female attached the cleaner but that's what she typically did. Also, I didn't want hundreds of babies swimming around. I don't have the room to put up another tank. I already have 2 X 35 gallon tanks up and running and the 300 gallon. I would love to have a fish room but with the way things are right now can't afford it.

Congrat on some great fish. I have a big female and long to get a male to go with her. If they ever spawn again siphon the babies out and send them to me. I will set up a tank for them no problem at all. They are beautiful fish.

I was actually looking into the tank tonight and the fry's are swimming around more and actually on the male's side of the divider. The fry's look like they are about 1-2cm long. The male is completely ignoring them and attacking me through the tank so I am pretty confident he is not eating them. Just by looking at them, looks like about 20 survived..:D
