That's so weird. Didn't that happen with the salt too? I was thinking test was faulty. From what I've heard the bacteria that breaks down the nitrite is more fragile and harder to grow then the ammonia eating ones. I don't know how true that is. I've never had an issue like that. When I was young we always did fish cycles. You'd get some dirty filter sponge or a scoop of gravel from lfs or a buddy and put some fish in the tank and bam usually good in a couple weeks. As I got older I haven't changed much I use a bacteria supplement now dose fish dose check dose check dose good add more fish dose check good weekly dose for about 4 weeks and if I add fish dose. After a couple months bb is strong and you are good. Biggest bioload I added at onetime were the filamented barbs to the 75 params never wavered. I'd see nitrite on a test if I tested at exactly the right time. If not I'd usually only see a little ammonia and then nitrate. Somewhere around 18-24 hrs after adding some ammonia source and the microbacter you can see nitrate you've got about 8 hr window to catch it with the daily dosing. If not after about 24hrs you can test and get nitrate readings. You have to keep dosing though for the amount of time. I think it's a minimum of a week to build the population but I don't stock very heavily to start so I do it gradually over a month. I guess I've gone on long enough now....lol

Things are well! Busy and enjoying the new city and house. I only lurk on here lately... got a bearded dragon living in a 100 gallon so for now my larger aquarium is on hold. I can actually interact and hold this guy.
