Back for another try, need advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I can't see that filter being too good for saltwater seems like the nitrates will stay in the polishing pad and normally the pump needs to have high output and max flow. That looks like a normal hob filter, I think you at the very least need a canister but preferred obviously being a sump and protein skimmer. Also with those big consumers like lion fish even the dwarves I would highly recommend a strong skimmer they produce a lot of waste

I've taken it off, you are right it is a bit pathetic.. I'm using fluval 205 temporarily, don't know why I'm bothering I don't think it's even working properly but I just hooked it up until I can plan everything in a suitable way.. I got a Kent nano skimmer, haven't used it yet, but people who have it have given it a decent review. As for a filter I've been look at an external canister filter by betta, it's betta 1050 with uv. http://www.betta-aquatic-products.co.uk/betta-1050-uv-canister-filter-upto-230l.html
LFS recommended it, probably so he can order it and make some money but seems decent. Anyone have any input or review on this filter?

I haven't used it personally, how much does it cost? If I were you I think the optimum solution would be to run a sump tank. That way you store the skimmer in there along with the heater. Use a hob overflow box your tank doesn't even need to be drilled and will probably cost the same if not less then that canister filter

I've bought a fluval 206 filter now, as I didn't have room to run a sump. I'll post a picture of the equipment set up once I'm finished some time this week

So modified the back by cutting the whole of the insides out of that terrible built in hood filter. Got the 206 running completely on micromec. The cycle officially begins. On the last picture of the close up LR any know what those green things are? So many little life forms came on these LR

That's a great start I'm happy to see the tank doing well up and running and there's some good quality live rock in there, more life the better. The last pic is button polyps on the rock which vary from brownish to green depending on the lighting they were receiving. Underneath them the green I think your talking about is asterina stars which are great for the clean up crew.

What are the parameters and what are you looking to stock?
Ammonia 0.25-0.5
PH 8.2
Nitrate between 40-80
Nitrite 0.25
Salinity .024
Tem 24dC

Seems a bit crazy right, but it's gone down slightly from what it was, which must mean it's good. Although I haven't had any algae blooms. Small patch if brown sand which I'm guessing is diatom?

Well I plan to start off with false percs, may get a few hermits. Maybe some type of wrasse? Like a male flasher. The last fish I'd love to add would be a fuzzy dwarf lionfish, from what I've read and seen were high success rates as long as they're originally from small and added last. I wanted a unique fish that is eye-catching and full of personality..

May venture down to limited soft corals, gsp or xenia, apparently they can thrive under t8s, mine are 2x20w

Did you seed the rock yourself or you bought established live rock? There should be no ammonia if it's established.

In all my reading and personal experiments, I am still not convinced UV works on SW tanks. If anything, only to prevent Ich.

It's from an established tank, the ammonia is from the flake food I've been putting in there from each day that built up I'm guessing? Tested parameters today and no difference so may give it another 1 or 2 weeks to see if it sorts itself out

I haven't botherd with a uv, I only wanted one cause I thought it could be just that extra little helpful since I don't have a QT but didn't bother.
